Other Awlgrip brand paint or....

Before I lay down my genericly hard earned dollar on paint I wanted to see what you think.

I want to paint my ski white, but I want it to last etc.
My body man has a friend who paints boats in FL who suggested using this Awlgrip stuff.
Its a marine epoxy paint, single stage. Supposed to be really really durable, they paint high dollar boats etc with this stuff.

If it keeps me from having to re-do it later it seems worth it. Gel Coat gets expensive and kind of a pain to apply IMO.

I'm looking at $250 worth of materials between primer and paint, and I should have some left over for touch ups etc.

Do ya'll know anything about this product? Do you think there is a better route?
I'm looking to pull the trigger today.

IMO if you want it to last don't paint it leave it stock or rattle can it so you can fix it easily.

Not worth the cost to paint then beat it up.

Tem of Superfreak skis really likes awlgrip paint.
$250 for paint supplies isn't bad. You could certainly do worse.
I spent well over $400 on HOK stuff (perhaps unecessarily so)

Oh, and rattle-canning it would be the polar opposite of "lasting".

I considered rattle canning it, and I appreicate the suggestion.
Right now the ski has dynaglass, bondo, etc all over it from various addtions and modifications. My thinking is that a good coat of paint will protect whats underneath.

Truthfully, I use TCPglobal stuff, and it holds up really well
You can get a Gallon kit for the paint, with a primer kit for around $100
Its single stage, and it holds up really great. If you ever need to touch up the paint, you still have 7/8 of a gallon to use!

Tem told me to use the Awlgrip 545 epoxy primer on my freak. I have some ordered and home to be trying it out soon.

Nason makes a single stage kit that is very durable and is fairly cheap. A gallon kit of white will run you about 100-125 bucks. We used it on all of our race skis because it lays down very easy and is hard as paint can be. It is what most fleet companies paint there over the road trucks with. I have dropped wrenches on m blaster with this stuff and not nicked or scratched it.

As for the bottom of the hull, doesn't matter what you paint it with, it WILL chip, nick, etc. Putting it on and off the trailer, riding it up on the beach, putting it on a stand, doesn't matter, it is going to scratch, nick, etc. All of my skis are rattle canned on the very bottom of the hull for that very reason. Top, hood and sides of hull, get painted, bottom of hull, rattle can - easy to fix later.

But can be fixed in seconds with just the shake and rattle of a can for about $1.99

Yes, but that doesn't mean it lasts. It's just so chitty in durability that the ONLY positive is the quick reapplication of more chitty.

So what i'm hearing is the Awlgrip is good, and reccomended by a reputible ski builder. But I can get almost equal results for much less money with a good single stage kit. Correct?

No paint that I know of is tougher or more scratch resistant than AWLGRIP, one thing, make damn sure you don't put a run in it because you won't sand it out, you might grind it off but Awlgrip does not sand and buff, what you have is what you have,forever.

Pics of paint with TCPglobal single stage acrylic enamel... Most were just painted at the time of pictures because that's when I take pictures but they all still look good. The flatdeck picture was abused and left to rot for a year and the picture was taken after a wash and a quick wax. It's not the best stuff by any means but for what it's going on and at roughly $100 for a gallon kit (give or take depending on color), I consider it a very good bargain.

1 Quart Kit... I would reccomend their Primer Kit as well, but I imagine you could get by with normal primer. Proceed at your own risk.

i dont think anything will last on the bottom if you pull your ski up on the beach. I used a akzo-nobel epoxy primer and base clear, and this stuff is great. I cant count the number of times ive dropped stuff on my paint, and it hasnt chipped.

The awlgrip does create a very hard shell. Whoever paints it needs to be mindful of runs, because this stuff is a B!tch to wetsand.

I have used the awlgrip on my sailboat,... but my ski,..... I use tractor implement paint on the bottom, 15.00 for a gallon gloss white. pretty tuff stuff. The top I spray with urethane base coat/clear coat paint. Paint it just like you would and fiberglass car. I painted the top of my ski silver, left over from a mitsubishi didn't cost me a thing.
