The proper terms to describe what happened are wrinkling or alligatoring. A gel coat thickness gauge should also be used.

Some reading material.

I was presented with the amazing opportunity to make one of 2 choices. The first choice was to do a great layup on the part and have an excellent looking replica of my ski in matching black gelcoat that just needed a wet sand and a buff. The second option was to do a terrible layup and end up with a piece of poop that needed an ass load of post molding work. Naturally, I signed up for option 2.

So, poop went south a bit. I have been beating myself up for the last few days because I was so happy with what I pulled from the mold and so disappointed when I found out that I had messed up so bad. These pictures wont show where I F*ed and I'm not going to post the pictures that do, because, quite frankly it does not reflect my abilities and I'm embarrassed to share them.

At least I laid down the gelcoat much better. I checked it at 18 mils and my mold can produce a nice product. I rushed myself on the layup and got air under the gelcoat. I can fix it, but I'm still very disappointed in myself.

Anyway, here is what it came out of the mold like before I checked it for air.

Gelcoat

Layup, yes, it's poop, I know. It's not very noticeable because the dye hide the air. It's 2 layers of 1208 with low profile poly resin dyed with black gelcoat.

Time to get some progress on this handle pole.

Mold flange.

IMG_3675.JPG

Sealed. Started using blue dye with the epoxy to ensure it is fully sealed.

About this time I realized the pole wasn't going to pull from the mold. I had been neglecting the pole for the hull. Now, cutting very close to deadline I didn't have time to make many changes, so I just went with a 2-part mold. I build the other half of the mold out of foam and drywall as I do everything.

So I went on a rant about the poop job I did on the hull. I'd like to make an argument in my favor here. This started as a job during nap time. While the plugs were built over 2.5 months, the parts were built and assembled in 2 weeks.

The last post was done in 1 day while I was working on other things. The divider for the mold was built one night after dark. Everything in this post was done in one day. Wax, PVA, gelcoat, layup, remove divider, wax, PVA, gelcoat, layup, all in 1 day while working on other projects in between. Although somethings are not perfect, I think I have a lot of potential with a little more practice.

Layup. 4 layers of 1208 if I remember right.

Wax and PVA after removing the divider. Side note, I didn't plan for the over spray from the other side of the mold. Lesson learned.

Layup. I struggled a lot on the corners. Need a little more practice, although in the future I plan to use close molding which could help.

My mold didn't cure over night. It got cold and I don't have time for that poop.

The mold has imperfections because I just didn't have time to make it perfect.

Looking good Vumad. I wouldn't worry yourself too much about the blemishes. This is a heartfelt gift for your child so it's already more perfect than you will ever imagine. They would much rather you spent the time with them than work out a few tiny little bubbles.

Thanks. Handle pole I'm not upset about. I think it's great. The hull is pretty bad though. If you saw those pictures, you'd say "what the poop man, you're better than that." Psyched myself up a little bit. I think it's going to work out though. I was going to do black gelcoat to match my ski. Now it has to be painted so I'm thinking Pink or a Doc-mcstuffins / Mickey mouse Club house wrap.

I'm jumping around a bit because so many different things happened in the last few days. I figured you guys would appreciate if I grouped liked items together.

Anyway, now that the pole plug is out of the mold, you get to start to see what this thing is supposed to look like.

Back wheels get a tad more complicated...

Started building the axles. Bet you can't guess what they are made of.

IMG_3696.JPG

Sealed up

Wax and PVA

IMG_3703.JPG

Layup. 2 layers 1208 with an extra piece at the axle and the front / back.

IMG_3706.JPG

After pulled and cleaned up a little

IMG_3718.JPG

Would have taken a bolt about 3/4" to be work as the axle, so instead I modified the original bushings so I could use a 5/16" bolt.

Uncut bushing

Completed axles. Not super pretty but not too shabby considering they went from nothing to plug to part in 2 days.
