Back From the Dead - Yamaha FX-2

After a lengthy search for another Yamaha hull, I finally found the perfect candidate. Thanks to @VXSXH20 for telling me about this hull posted on Facebook. I don't know the story behind this ski but if anyone does, i'd love to hear the details! I planned out and made a quick surf trip and luckily @CarterB was coming out to ride and agreed to bring the hull to Jax to meet me. I ended up driving just a pinch over 900 miles but with fuel cost at a low, My investment was minimal.

My plans were to find another Yamaha hull and build a surf ski that would replicate the $5000+ AM hulls. I understand that this will never be the same as those hulls, nonetheless I am confident it will make an excellent performing ski for my abilities and goals. I am also a big fan of fixing things that others deem to be "junk". As i'm sure most of you know, Yamaha only produced the FX-1 for 2 years and in very limited quantities. These were hand laid fiberglass in Japan and featured a unique design. That being said I am more than happy to save this hull from its final resting place. There is much work ahead of me, but all I can see is potential. The drive to be unique and to go a step beyond are deep traits in my personality, this hull is a new challenge and an exciting one at that. This is going to take a lot of time and serious planning, I am interested in taking many measurements and to get input from other riders. I plan on using an @tom21 - 144 pump conversion and my existing Skat Mag from my SN.

Yeeea Buddy! she's already looking good and a nice base to start with. I'd Suggest lowering the exhaust tube and going widetray since its cut open. The side repair will not be too hard. The FX hull can be improved upon in many subtle ways. Put a few layers of glass inside under the pole bracket area. Since you have to fix the hood channel anyhow. You can build up a lip in the front corners to hold it centered. Also, you may consider beefing up the hood channel underneath. I have pics of most all this stuff id be more than happy to dig up and share. I have tom21 sponsons on my fx1 and it rides so much nicer. Lookup @SpecialFx,@Flash-FX @wavehog build. You got Sano and Hornedogg in your backyard, I'm very excited to see this come back to life! Good Luck and Congrats Buddy!

Here comes the 2nd longest Build Thread in history!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL JK......... Sortof.

Im counting on it! We needs some reedin material and pitchers to get us thru the purgatory we've been living in!
Ohh there will be pictures... and yes, Im really lucky to have found such great friends right over the mountain. Ive already spoken with Don about how i'm excited to compare and share ideas for both of our builds, plus Hornedogg built the original Rickter killer so hopefully I can borrow some ideas from him as well! The ideas so far are,

Rickter or RN style handlepole bracket and pole
Fully reinforced hull, well planned with minimal added weight
Widened side rails
Tom21 sponsons
Biggest LPW Yamaha based engine that I can fit with a big single carb
144 pump tunnel with my Skat set-back mag
Rickter style adjustable FOOTHOLDS @Big Kahuna hahah
Possibly, shorten a bit?? Rocker a bit?? Not sure but going to think it through very thoroughly and get input.

I was gonna ask Wally if she would give you your nuts back so I could kick them if you did not install footholds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If the price is right "scoop" those up. Toby also makes glass and carbon plates for the FX1. Protec helps keep the nose down marginally.. Its a slick bottom like OEM. Riva Groovy basically the same feel ( IMO ) as the protec. Those are good pieces to keep the stock loose feel but aid in keeping it straight. If you want to tighten it up a bit.. look for a DG Quadrafin. I never cared for the fitment and feel of the Jet Dyanmics plate but to each his own. Good luck finding a Shredmaster intake/plate combo. Hornedogg had one.. Ive never ridden one.

-If you are planning on shortening the rear hull at all.. a longer plate may make it ride more awkward. I cannot say for sure but I do know a lot of surf guys actually prefer the stock fx ride plate. Since you are starting from scratch. Id grab those that BK posted anyway. This is all contingent if your still keeping the rear pump area stock. you can get a 144 shoe in there or I have seen a few bore the stock 122 shoe as far as it can go and it has decent results on a stockish engine running a 144 pump. But since you are going larger bore.. a Tom21 pump tunnel will do the trick.. Or graph a SJ rear section in and then you have more room to work in plus many ride plate options.
Reference Flash-FX build.

Excited to see this one come together. If using the Sj length driveshaft I don't think you need to shorten the rear. The pump is already hanging back 2in further than stock. This makes it way more responsive like d cutting your ride plate. You'll need a SJ intake grate with the tom21 kit. I preferred an old westcoast 2 bar open grate on mine. Top loader scoop grate overloaded my pump. The stock fx1 intake will feed a 144 just fine with a scoop grate. Fx1 has more rocker than a SJ front to rear. And the way the pole bracket is mounted makes the front feel short anyway. You can't see much of the nose while riding. I do like having the lip pulled up a few inches for surf riding.

I will post some of this in the WTB section as I get to the point of needing it. But to let everyone know what I lack as of now, I will post this list. If you have any of these items and would like to sell them let me know at any time, I will update the list as I acquire each piece.

Parts Needed for Completion:

Intake Grate for SJ, 144 pump conversion
Midshaft/Midshaft Housing
Exhaust Pipe-Stainless for through hull,
can't remember diameter.. is it 2.5"?
Stainless Cooling lines, probably just 3/8" ID with dual cooling
Steering Cable and through hull PVC
Throttle Cable
E-Box Mount,
hopefully cheap OEM
Battery Tray, hopefully cheap OEM
Stock RN Handlepole Pivot Bolt
Stock RN chin pad

Pump Threaded Inserts, @Sanoman did you have a source for these? T1?

Motor is already done ;) LPW
I have plenty of fiberglass and resin and tools
Waiting out the holidays for my pump conversion and tubbies

Still a LONG way to go!
