Custom/Hybrid Backi-Chan build

Well its time. I got my chan and its pretty dang sweet. I want to start this build thread to show people more in detail this hull and also get some feed back and tips on assembly and riding.

This hull being the ONLY hull I have ever seen in person there where some surprises. The order process is a little sketchy to say the least. But some how Steve got it done. He is a super busy guy and I ordered a hull at the worst time. I called him and ski clinic and after several failed attempts at both I was getting no answer I was getting a little discouraged. Being a long way away from any ski shop customer service over the phone/computer is key. So my thoughts were if I cant even get a hold of someone to buy a hull what if i get one and I have a problem and need help. Am i going to be s.o.l. But eventually steve called me back after ski clinic got in touch with me and said they were to busy to take an order till the 15th of oct after finals. Steve said two weeks I can have a hull ready to ship. This was at the end of august.

Steve also called me back I think a couple days later not even listening to his messages, just from seeing a missed call. This impressed me. I own a tint shop and get calls all day long some times I miss one. If they dont leave a message its most likely a sales call that will just waste my time. But steve being the hard worker he is and not wanting t let a potential job slip away he called my number and sold a hull. I have one complaint. He needs a woman to get the paper side stuff done (not that they are only good for paper stuff they just seem to be better than men at paper work) I hate paper work. my hull supposedly sat for two weeks before it shipped and i never got a tracking number. that caused stress. I run a full time business and help run a farm. So knowing when a delivery truck is going to show is nice. Of course I was tinting a pos 94 camery in another city for a stereo shop I do work for when the truck driver called. So i had to drop my heat gun and leave a job to unload the truck. Im sure he was annoyed by me texting everyday asking for tracking info and half the time not getting a reply. I was starting to wonder if i gave a few $$$$ dollars to some random dude on the internet was such a good ideal lol. Again this was all before world finals. The worst time to buy jet ski parts so I understand. He got it handled and some how fit me in.

This hull in beautiful that being said its hand made and not perfect. only about 99% symmetrical. Cosmetic things. The nose is a tiny bit off when you look down from a standing position. The latch indent is not perfect and the tail of the tray has varying thickness where its cut. Again I only read how clean and nice these skis are compared to the other after market stuff so i just tell my self ok thats how it is deal with it lol. Dont compare your custom hull to a mass produced super jet. Plus mine is the base model glass hull on the cheap so I get what I pay for. I would love to see a diy bob in person.

This thing is light. I have it with foam and that is the heavy end for sure. center of balance is prob between the hood opening and the front of the foot hold. I can lift this thing easy. It reminds me of a wet stunt kayak. parts are thin where they dont need strength and parts are thick where they do. I was hasty and didnt weigh it but no hood i would say its in the low 80s and the hood is under ten? I lifted my newly gutted (and for sale rn hull) off the stand and it was not light. I will weigh it. I think its like near 150 with no hood and stock hoods are heavy.

I wanted to take pics of everything. Not just the usual chan glam shots.

pump tunnel is huge. and the hull indents just before the intake. I'm assuming for better jet ski freestyle enjoyment.

I am super anal when it comes to things being straight. So mounting the pole was hard especially when the hull in not perfect. Mounting a stock rn bracket with studs would me a nightmare. Most of all this hull is brand new. I makes my shop smell like resin. You dont want to go hacking it up with drill bits. Some pro should make a how to. on pole mounting. experience from my rn i mounted my bracket taking measurements form points on the hull. this worked but by the time you stuck a pole on it and rode it the pivot on the steering was not cetered over the hood latch perfectly. I had to adjust this a few times. I never separated the pol from the bracket during the swap over. Im a master eye baller. Also mount mark and drill with the hood on.

Now that the pump sticks out of the back like a bad ass aftermarket short hull i need to clean up the raider nozzle.

pump alignment was less that fun. First off the inserts are not oem super jet. I think they are the same as js hull kawi. I think if I were to eye ball it. they are m10 by 1.5. I think super jets are fine thread m10 1.25. correct me if im wrong. I had some oe JS pump bolts (I think) that fit. It took a stack of washers on the back and none on the front to get it close. My rn i had the shaft hitting the hull when i took the mid shaft off (woops) haha. Oh and either remove your alignment pins our drill holes in the hull for the pump and the mid shaft. I drilled holes and that was a pain. If you are not perfect you throw everyting off.

I dont like this. Maybe make a valley in the hood to clear the pivot bolt? To avoid a fat stack of foam.

ok the main reason i made this thread.. How the flip to you mount the ebox. Its tight. and the wall is curved. do I just bolt it? if I do the bolts on the out side wont sit flush do to the curve of the tray. and its thin there. Im scared bolts would crack it or want to pull through.

And the stock water box is tight. I will make my own this winter. Custom Chan box lol.

Very nice. I ordered one just like it about the same time as you. Also I have that same trailer, so I am looking forward to seeing how you modify it to hold the chan.

Ok you asked a lot of questions. So ill try to answer as many as I can.

First, reach out to some of your Chan brethren man! If it wasn't for deftons, hornedogg and others I would have been way stressed during assembly! Or more stressed anyway....

Lead time and delivery. I feel your pain, I agree Steve could probably use someone to handle the paperwork side. But as he mentioned, he's gonna have to bump the prices to keep it profitable. I doubt he has room in his overhead to hire a book keeper/ logistics coordinator. Part of the problem is that many of Steve's customers (You and I) are first time AM hull buyers. We both work in a industry where being on time and doing what you say is crucial. So we expect the same when completing other transactions.

Pump alignment- I had washers on the back also. I believe he makes his mold for the worst case scenario reduction nozzle. They all arn't the same. But the gap/ washer stack I see on your ski is about right. Refer to my "That's normal" thread. ;)

Pump bolts- I believe Steve threads aluminum plate for all the inserts. The reason for the different pitch on the pump inserts is that you cannot get stock SJ pitch bolts at the hardware store. So he threads it to a more common pitch so you can run a variety of hardware. I think it's a positive change.

Steering/ hood clearance- were all running thick pad, my steering pivot is farther forward than yours, so a 'indent' would be hard to apply to all pole lengths. Check out Deaftons, Addicts or my ski on pad thickness. Once again, :) it's normal.

I didn't completely understand what you were saying about mounting the pole. Steve did mine. So :dunno:

My best suggestion? Take a deep breath, ask questions.

Yes you're gonna have to bolt through the tray to mount the ebox. Use rubber washers as spacers to help with shock absorption.

I would glue a stack of foam around the pole bolt instead of the hood too. It's just an option. That way it moves with your pole if you ever adjust.

His paint sure is nice, but something to be said for one in white, looks clean. What's your plan where the drive shaft enters the hull? It looks open to the bottom deck,no tube, unless I missed something.

You don't need to bolt thru the hull, I'll go grab a picture of what I did.

Edit:

Here you go, made this plate and epoxied it to the flat part of the fire wall. Then when bolting ebox to it use a spacer the thickness of the back of the box between box and plate.

Or option 2 that may be easier if you have the stock mounts, just bolt those up to the plate you make to get spacing.

the gap is for an intake grate. I just threw away a broken vxr grate I could have cut up. dang it.

I wish I had a cool piece of carbon plate around.

I will do a plate similar to that. some blue carbon kev is ordered. but for now I will use aluminum.

horndogs slide out vid makes me want to ride it so bad. I can not do that on my sj.

I thought the shoe gap was filled by intake grate, I just don't remember it on my other hulls that I ran without an intake grate. Tunnel matches the pump shoe extremely well. What about the driveshaft hole? Is it just the camera angle or something I'm missing? Looks to be open to the bottom deck.

I thought my xscream waterbox was gonna be cake to install, but no matter how small the box is if u are running a limited chamber it is going to have to be placed a tad bit sideways. So much rocker and not to mention the pole breather tubes hanging down with cables and what not. It's a PITA but its so worth it. I actually junked my b pipe to waterbox coupler and used a 90* elbow but cut it to size. I may have done my install ass backwards tho, kinda nice because my pole breathers and all cables are hidden in front of the waterbox. Kinda SANO not seeing that stuff

How much wider is a chan than a rn ? was gonna try h20 designs wb in my rn they r small but inlets and outlets r to wide hoses would of ended up rubbing on side of hull, tdr is way smaller

I knew i was gonna forget to address something. I have a first gen Xmetal box. The outlet was a PITA, but its working, even with a limited chamber. OEM can work, but I'd track down a TDR, best bang for the buck but still smallish.

I had to mount it forward of the breather tubes, so basically half way between the front and back hooks. But that was because of the chamber.

I made an aluminum plate for my ebox, the top bolts to the hood latch screws and the bottom mounts to the midshaft bolt.
