Custom/Hybrid Best Standup for Carving Buoys?

A few will swear by their 2008+ Superjets which are great all around skis and some of the occasional racers do well on them in their local scene but when it comes down to the more serious stuff like World Finals its mainly Hydro Space or SXR. If you're an all around rider that likes to get stupid rec riding and occasionally running buoys then the 2008+ Super Jet is a good call.
For what its worth OP, that is some decent advice. They do carve WAY better than the pre 08 sj. I heard there is one race team strictly running new SJ's and doing fairly well????? Not sure which team, and I heard it from a guy who heard it from a guy so take that with a grain of salt lol.

Norway runs almost all new hull SJ's at havasu and those guys kill it in AM lights, novice stock, and other non pro classes.you usually don't see any superjets in pro ski or gp classes.

for the price, an sxr or roundnose with tubbies is a decent carver. depends on the rider just as much as the ski

The 2008+ SJ handles really well on a race course, as good as the SXR. The difference is the SXR is easier to ride. More Stable. The SJ has to be ridden very aggressively. It will carve as good as the SXR, but you will get tired much faster on the Superjet.

Now, if you just want a good ski to ride, The 96+ Superjet will do it all. slap a long ride plate on there and Worx intake grate and you can go carve bouys, the ski does not lean into a turn like an SXR or SXI Pro, you have to learn a different technique, it is more flat turning, but you can still have a blast ripping bouys. Keep in mind from 1996-2003, Most racers raced Superjets, that changed after 2003 when the SXR came out, then you rarely saw a SJ on the tracks.

Is there much difference between 750 sxi and sxi pro? Can the sxi be setup with Tubbies to rip the same? If so, how?

Big difference between an SXI hull and an SXI pro hull. The SXI pro has deep strakes that allow it to "grip" the water and thus carve much better. The SXI has shallow strakes and tends to slide, especially in choppier water conditions. Adding Tubbies to the SXI will not help this. Because you're fighting the SXI's tendency to slide, you tire quicker, and you slow down. All skis can be made to carve, but the ski that carves with the least input allows you to not get tired as quickly so you don't slow down

I've been very happy with my 08 superjet on a race course and my ski always has a few sxrs behind it. I think the 08+ sj is a great all around rec ski and possibly the best all around rec ski. It will run buoys, do freestyle, and it's even fun in the surf. From what I have noticed a sxr is only good on the track, they aren't much fun for freestyle or surf.
Any ski can be a good buoy ski, you just need to have some time in the tray. No ski out there is going to make you rip buoys on your first ride unless you know what you are doing. If you want the best stand up for carving buoys pick one in your price range and ride the piss out of it.

What about deepening the strakes on the SXI hull? Will that give the same results as the sxi pro?

I have an 95 SXI in the garage that is getting a makeover this winter and updating the strakes will not add a lot to the project. But if it is not worth doing...

Buddy of mine bought one of Tera Laho's 98 RIVA Promod SJ's she use to race in the old ProMod days. It had built up strakes. Handled really nice. You could do that.

Yes if carving is your goal than deepening the strakes will definitely help. And if this ski is all that's in your budget then adding Tubbies and deepening the strakes would be even better. I used to have a 95 SXI. It was a great ski, but by today's standards it would be considered obsolete (when compared to the SXR). Just because its Obsolete doesn't mean it's not a super fun ski to ride. My SXI was a great rec ski. But before you spend a ton of time and money in modifying you need to ask yourself what is your ultimate goal? It sounds like you just want a decent handling ski to carve around in lakes and rivers. If so, you're in luck because that's where an SXI shines. They handle very well in smooth water and are super fun to ride. However, If your ultimate goal is to get into racing and to compete, then any mods you do to your SXI, although helpful will still fall short of the handling of the newer skis, so you are probably better off saving your cash to get an SXR or a 08+ Superjet.
