BLASTER SURF MODS with 701ind

With the freeride movement in Aus gaining huge momentum , the Blaster, as a awesome freestyle surf machine, has become the most sort after and hard to buy ski on the market. With the average price for a average Blaster around $4000, modded ones selling for over $9000, I see this as a growing trend around the World. Maybe no so much yet in the States, but I predict, as Surf Riding on this ski becomes more popular, availability will dry up as demand grows. So I would tuck that second Blaster you have lying around away and watch what happens.
Im going to do this as a running post on all the Surf Mods that you can do to truly make your Blaster into the freeride beast that it can be.
All the products that 701IND make for the Blaster are built around my Pilots, who are some of the best and hardest riders in the World. Without there feed back, knowledge, insight and testing, none of these products would have hit the market. So ,be sure when I talk about something, its already been proven a pure Surf edition .
We are going to start with a bone stocker, and break it down into sections. When done, its going to be a pure Surf beast, and there is no limit to what tricks with practice can be accomplished. Next post I will drill down into the transom.surf ready.jpg surf ready seat.jpg

TRANSOM:
The rear of the Blaster in its present form is nowhere near strong enough to handle the surf freeride. Especially as most tricks performed on the Blaster, require a lot of air, this makes for the rear of the ski to become highly likely to crack. More like 100% going to start with stress fractures, and then having the bond line split. Once this happens, there is no way around a cheap repair bill.
If you intend to be a freerider, and want to look after your pride and joy, the best thing you can do is to make the transom surf ready. Having the rear of your ski done with this mod, will give you peace of mind that no matter what you throw at it, your transom is protected.
#1 Add a Transom Plate. This addition of a SS plate will make your factory week rear super strong. The strength from this Transom Plate is not in its thickness, but in the process of laminating. Using a good marine sealant, covering the back of it and fixing it on, forms a very rigid rear , strong enough to handle massive air. The Transom Plates are sold as standard polished Plain, standard Carbon wrapped Plain, Polished with left exhaust, or carbon wrapped with left or right exhaust.
#2 Add a Surf Wedge. This Wedge is a water deflector, directing water away from under the rear deck overhang, and taking all the pressure when landing, off the bond line. This Wedge is kept short of each end so you are still able to pick the ski up from the rear. If you have ever gone to pick a ski up that has had its overhang removed, you will know what im talking about. The Surf Wedge is made from Polymer and comes in 6 colours. All mounting hardware is supplied.
#3 Add a rear exhaust. I cant understand what the Japs were thinking when they decided to put the exhaust outlet in the pump tunnel. Im thinking for maybe noise levels. Any way, I hate looking inside of the tunnel and seeing a black carbon covered pump. For that reason alone, I would opt for a rear outlet. A rear exhaust brings turns your Blaster into a modern style rear, looks awesome, and opens up that cool exhaust note, especially if your running a pipe. The 701 Rear Exhaust comes 500mm long so attaching the standard exhaust hose is made easy. Having to fit this hose working through the battery box, this longer pipe becomes easy as. The flange is also set at the correct angle to compensate for the angled transom. Each pipe comes complete with a 3mm rubber gasket , SS fixing screws, and a block-off plate for where the old exhaust is removed. The Exhaust flange is stocked in round or can be ordered in as a Reaper style.
#4 Add Surf Plugs. Its more important than ever, to maintain a dry hull in a freestyle ski. Having water hanging around the bottom of the hull is asking for trouble. Having water thrown over your motor is never good. Water can breach the motor bay from different areas. A leaking mid seal is common. The Surf Plugs is a good way to keep the hull dry as you are freeriding. These plugs are not there to drain your hull once you are swamped. Although they will help, That's the job of a bilge pump. These Surf Plugs have a micro mesh filter to protect against debris causing the ball valve being caught open.
The great part about being able to buy these dedicated surf mods in various colours, can make the rear of your Surf Blaster look trick.
PRICES for 2014.
Transom Plate -polished exh or plain $149.00 Transom Plate - carbon wrapped exh/plain/ left or right $159.00 Surf Wedge $89.00 Surf Plugs $59.00 [ a pair] Rear Exhaust Kit round $119.00 reaper $129.00
To spend now on these mods is a cheap alternative than becoming a victim of CRACK.

If you live in Aus you could have your seat modded into a freestyle one by 701IND but outside of that, its up to the individual to get this done. Contact 701 Chris and the company he uses ,DRIVEN, maybe able to help you.

Why are the blasters so popular in AU?
For freeride in Aus you have a choice of Stand up or Blaster. Other models of ski don't rate a look. You will see the occasional B2 trying to have a crack, but in reality its not suited. I also see a trend over here where a Stand-up rider also wants a Blaster. This way they get to hone there skills on two different skis, allows them to compete at Title events in different classes, more ride time at Freeride events, and allows them to attract sponsors they may have overlooked them before. I personally manage a Pilot that on a stand-up was maybe in the top 10 at events, but on the Blaster, after only a few rides, was in a shoot of the final at the Krash Titles up against #1 Blaster rider in Aus. I think a lot of stand-riders can easily bring there skill to the Blaster, and where they might not get noticed before, instantly get noticed. This could be part of the huge supply demand as well as the growing popularity of freeride.

This is the seat they did for Chris. It looks super cool. A lot of work went into making this one off seat. You would have to check with Driven what it would cost to do. Cheers701 seat.jpg

BOND LINE CRACK: This is what will happen if you don't take measures to stop it before happens. For sure if your just a rider that doesn't see yourself trying to go as high as you can, you might dodge that sort of crack. I do know for sure your transom will develop stress fractures from surf riding. The Transom plate will cover these stresses and make a super strong rear. For the money it costs now to get on top of it, is a small price to pay compared to having to reinforce with fibreglass. And then there is the down time . Don't be a victim of Crack.

Too bad my exhaust is already ran on the right side...

There would be a lot of Blasters that already have rear exhausts, either left or rights. In that situation you get supplied a :non Exhaust Transom plate: Its a case of then doing the measurements yourself and drilling the plate to suit. Never a easy product to drill, but with the right gear and patience, it can be done.

The Surf Wedges come in 6 colours ,Red,Black,Blue,Green,Orange and Yellow. Very simple in design ,yet effective, and super easy to fit. Just remove the 5 M6 bolts holding on the black trim. You then fit the wedge by starting at one side , pushing it up and bending it as you go. Knock it all the way up with a soft mallet, pre drill the 5 screw holes through the existing holes, and then screw in the SS self taping screws that are supplied fitting the black trim as you go.. All fitted in 10mins. Your bond line is now Surf ready for big air. 10 mins and $89.00 will be nothing compared to how long your ski is out of action and the repair cost should you risk not fitting one.
