good luck finding any 518. MrSki used it all on one set of 550 cases.

if you're snapping girdle bolts left and right, something else is going on. they shouldn't be snapping like that unless they're a poor grade of steel. you gotta put some serious pressure on a stainless steel girdle bolt to pull it apart, and a lot more pressure than one of these little engines make.

The girdle bolts on an R&D head are very thin. Not thick like a SJ or like the studs. The heads actually pop off. I've actually only snapped two, same as the studs. The cases are from a 97. Probably just old beat up studs that have never been removed from the cases. Dude, my ski makes a billion, zillion, Gajillion HP! Funny thing is, in 12 years, I've never busted a motor mount, but I've busted 8 handlepoles. (Including an aluminum one 3 times)

btw...I actually have the girdle kit. PIA to install because the nuts are off centered and have to be shimmed (pulling the cyllinder on and off 25 times to get it right)....probably not good for the gasket! Just a poor design in my opinion. The head should just stick out further...

This motor is only 11 months old. Only ridden 5 months! (25 times total???) Do you guys recommend full rebuild or just replace the 1 piston, both sets of rings and 1 upper bearing? No cyllinder damage and no ring damage, (nothing fell below the rings)...

DJ, r u torquing the end bolts to proper torque with a wrench. I know its a pita, but the watcon tool works well for doing that.
I had the cyl head that you had to machine the cyl. Sucked getting it done but worked great, no bolts at the bottom. SXRs are famous for cracking the cyl on the corners so i figured id do everything I could to save it.

It would expensive to get titanium studs and girdle bolts made, but you wouldn't have to worry about them breaking anymore...lol

Just get the cylinder lightly honed, put a new piston in it.

DJ I've broken 3 studs off my old motor and ended up cracking a mounting flange on the cylinder because of it too. Make sure to check your cylinder all over for any signs of a crack starting. I'd sell that R&D head and buy an ADA with a girdle kit - they seem absolutely bullet proof when I had one on mine.

We (Kawi guys) break the studs, you (Yamaha) guys break the motor mounts, couplers and crank seals. They are all made to be ran stock and cruised around.

My studs were 13 years old and were never removed.

What Watcon tool??...I thought they were just impossible to torque?
