I remember the hydro-ski article when that mag came out. Those of us that were surf riding with the 440/550 at the time were very skeptical of it's abilities to be anything more than a race ski.

Allright, so...as I said..I was torn between which direction I wanted to take my riding. On the one hand, I still enjoyed drag racing my buddies. You can't deny the thrill and exhilaration of going fast on a jet ski. And, I was now able to get a whopping 42 -43 mph out of my 550. If I could keep that motor together, that is.
But, the tug of doing tricks was pulling on me just as hard. By this time, I could 180 stab, fountain, and ride on the hood.
I was Badass, with a 70's pornstar 'stache!
The magazines were all foaming at the mouth over this new Lazer-Mess, though. Splash magazine featured a ride report/test with Jeff Jacobs, proclaiming that "This thing could win, straight out of the box!" "50mph!!!".
That's it, I couldn't take it any more. I plunked down 6K for a twin carb F15. The idea of going 50mph, on a stock boat, with PJS drivetrain... was just too good to pass up.

the good old days consisted of hunting and fishing, not jet ski junk. i'm glad i got a late start and missed most of the garbage years.

That's an ironic comment.
It's all relative buzzbomb. My new[at the time] '87 550 was a ton of fun! I learned some basic fundamentals on that craft...both wrenching as well as riding, some of which, carry over to this day. It's all relative... in that, 25 years from now...I'd wager that we'll look back on a 1200 SuperFreak/Rickter/DVX and say "How the hell did we ever ride that POS"?

i'll be long dead in 25 years, but before that, i'm sure i'll look back and remember how much fun i was having on my 701-1200cc boats. i now look back 11 years and thank my lucky stars i ditched my x2 after a couple seasons and got an sxr. glad i skipped a lot of snail boat years. i used to be an awesome mechanical genius, but now i get dumber every day working on this 2 stroke junk that any moron could figure out and thats just the way i like it. ignorance is bliss!
