Buggered my shoulder....

Just got back off a week's vacation with an injury (as per usual). I was jumping in some pretty decent surf, got a bit out of shape and decided to bail. The trouble is that I didn't quite push the ski away enough, so I landed on the ski from about 10 feet up! Smacked my head (wearing a helmet), knocked all the wind out of myself, and buggered up a rotator cuff. Now I'm in an arm sling waiting on a physiotherapy appointment  They don't think it needs surgery which is great, but I won't be riding for a bit :banghead:

That sucks. Where was your vacation that you got that kind of waves?

St George Island, just off Apalachicola. The wind had been blowing hard (force 4 to 5) for several days, so a nice swell had built up. There's a cut through the island that lifts the swell when the tide is going out, and a nice line of rocks that keep the wind from churning things up too badly - perfect!! (Unless you're not paying attention....)

My last bail ended in SKI injury and some pissed off fellow FREERIDERS who had to help drag the boat to shore. I hope I learned my lesson before a bodily injury (plenty of close calls there too) accurs.

Yeah - bailing is bad, but my mind keeps clinging to the knowledge that I wouldn't have broken my leg before if I could have got my feet out of the footholds. As long as I have some good contact with the ski I'm not letting go, but this time that was hard to do - I had both feet out with the ski vertical and the pole fully extended. It would have been a great superman if I could have got back into the tray for the landing....

In my defense, I did land ON the ski, so technically I didn't totally let go :cool2: At the moment of impact I was gripping the ski tightly with the front of my helmet, my left armpit, and several ribs down my right side :Banane01:

I can see it now. SJbrit injures arm and resorts to riding a couch to get out on the water and maybe shoot some video but after one day he was hooked like crack. His SJ is now on ebay.

I am a newer rider so forgive me. Why not throw the ski away if you know its going to be a bad landing? I ride flatwater but my boats wake is 4-5 feet, when I get 7-8 feet up and know its bad I throw it. Is the issue with landing on the ski and getting hurt? The one time I tried to stay on it and save it I took the bars to the chin resulting in stitches (I have a full helmet now).

Someone help me understand??

The best way not to hit your ski when you land is to hold it away from you, but that means having to have hold of it in the first place. So, you're pretty much guaranteed not to have a problem if you keep hold of the ski. The problems come when you don't really have a grip on it, which usually means both hands off or both feet off. Even with both feet off you can make a good attempt at having one or both land in the tray of you keep hold of the bars. Both hands off is the real killer - bail time!!
