Buoy Racer Budget Build

I need some advice on modding my Blaster just a little more for running in the Sport Spec class. I'm wanting to get a little more speed & handling out of it without breaking the bank. It currently runs around 46mph and I'd like to get it to 50-52. I'm finishing up a turbo couch build which will be the main ski I'm riding/racing/sinking $ into. I still rec ride both the RXP-X & Waveblaster too.

Engine mods I was thinking to lighten stock flywheel, rev limit mod on stock cdi, and dual carbs. Which dual carbs would offer the best bang for the buck though? Also, would I need a different CDI when going to dual carbs? Wanted to add that I'm not opposed to staying with a single carb if you guys thing I could still get good acceleration and speed with a single setup.

Handling, I was planning on some small sponsons on the rear, rear extensions, jet dynamics intake grate and shave the seat down some.

This is what is done to the blaster so far. I am running the single stock carb setup.
  • 61X Engine, Premix
  • R&D Head 170/170 Compression
  • Factory B Pipe Header
  • Mod Pipe Chamber
  • Riva Waterbox
  • Riva Intake Filter
  • Riva Groovy Ride Plate
  • Solas Intake Grate

What would you guys recommend? Again, I am trying to get the best bang for buck mods but I do plan on spending some $.... Just trying to get across that I'm not trying to go all out and squeeze everyyyy bit of power I can out of it. Trying to make this more of my fun budget ski that could still be competitive in the spec class since I have my Turbo RXP-X as my fast one.

I don't think you can lighten your flywheel in spec.
Dual carbs isnt going to do much unless you change out your cases to 62t.
Just do handling mods, like sponsors, good intake grate, maybe steering and wait till you have some cash to do the motor.
Oh, ride it WFO all the time

Things like lighter flywheel, reeds, etc won't get you the top speed you are looking for anyway. Pump tuning could get you some more speed at the exchange of bottom. Flywheel and reeds could help get a little it of the bottom back you give up for the speed you asked for.

Well, you've got one of the hardest things to source - the pipe. So, you are on the right track. If it were me, I'd:

62t cases (can be found used to save some money)
Dual intake - Boyesen and DASA are really good
VF3s or Boyesen Reed blocks - both work awesome
Good carbs - 46s are good, 48 DASAs/Novis or Full Specs better
ADA girdle head (for insurance, Yamaha twin cylinders have been known to crack)
30cc domes, should get you around 185 with a t cylinder
Protec modded cdi or mad enhancer
Dry the pipe as much as possible, top and middle screws closed, bottom, barely open
Flow control valve in the stinger
Hooker 10/16 prop
Word or JD intake grate
Pro Tec ride plate

This above set up will get you as close to 50-52 as you are going to get depending on how good you are at turning and hull set ups. That is the basic set up of all the top guys in the class.

Good luck,
Scott

Thanks alot for the info Scott! I haven't messed around with any of the screws but will set them like you said. Wasn't aware of using a flow control valve either. Looks like I'll be looking to collect a few parts here and there to have this thing ready for May.

How does the Protec modded CDI differ from the stock cdi? Rev limiter adjusment only? Any curves change? If it is the rev limiter mod being the only difference, I will send mine in to OCD. Any site sponsors sell blaster sponsons? Will this 61x B-Pipe bolt up to a 62T motor?

You'll either have to helicoil your cylinder bolt holes to fit 61x bolts or what I did to mine was just drill the manifold holes. I would suggest the helicoil route though in case you ever plan on selling the pipe.

The protec mod is just a simple rev limiter adjust. I wasn't aware OCD did that. In that case, yes, use him, he's a good dude.

I just drill out the manifold to accept the larger 62t exhaust bolts. Less likely they will come lose being larger bolts. But, the other fellow has a point with resale. There are more people out there rocking 61x cylinders in the free ride community than there are ones using 62t.

I'm a fan of the 760 carb and intake setup. Very good bang for the buck on a 62t case.

If you're going all out go with what has already been suggested for carbs.

If you decide to switch cylinders don't forget class rules limit you to 82mm (718cc)

Hull extensions are also pretty nice. They improve the handling quite a bit. I can get you setup with some if needed.

At the end of the day a lot of it is rider. The more you practice, the faster you will be.

I had a blaster 1 with a 61x single carb and factory mod pipe. I built another one with a 62t/61x motor, dual oem 38's, and a factory limited pipe, and the 62t/61x combo is much faster with a lot better acceleration! They both had an MSD enhancer, the same grate and prop.

I was getting 52 on a wetjet single 46 setup, enhancer, 185psi, flow control at 4k, bored bpipe/manifold, 10/16 hooker, rear exhaust setup, rockered front surf boat. Used my strava bike app, I assume it's pretty accurate.

Thank you guys for the feedback. I've got alot better direction on which way I need to go and which parts I need to get between now and May. Just gotta finish up the last few things on my big ski first. Planning to send my CDI to OCD & then keep my eye open for deals here and there on carbs, cases, etc.
