Charge coil

How many people have had to change out charge coils on stators? I have had to change out the charge coil on two of my skis In the last couple of years, skis would run awesome when fired up but slowly deteriorate as they got warm. Both are mid 90s a squarenose and a blaster but the electronics have been gone through and cleaned up using ocd wiring, Cdi’s, and coil packs....

I’ve got another custom hull ski that the motor has been entirely gone through it’s a 61x/62t jetmaniac bored to 84mm. Had dual blackjack 44s on php manifold with force reeds. OCD wiring and coil with MSD enhancer. I’ve noticed a loss of power over the last season I even bored it from an 83-84mm this winter to freshen the top end up but I’ve been having to lean out the carbs as of late or else the plugs are black and oily. I went through the carbs with brand new oem kits this last week and still the motor just doesn’t seem to have the power it should/did and seems to get worse as it gets warm. The stator is a rebuilt jss 61x purchased about 4 seasons ago (live in the northwest and only get 20-30 hours a year on the motor).

Could this be ANOTHER charge coil? Seems like it from the symptoms but I rarely read about people swapping them out so I’m hesitant to spend another $150 throwing parts at it.

Thoughts??!

What do you have for a CDI?

No I haven’t... considered swapping it out but a new one is $$$, would hate to swap for nothing... when they start to go do they take anything else out?

I have had to replace 2 over the years. If you test the stator cold and it ohms out ok ride the ski then test it hot. I found that my reading climbed at least 100 ohms when it was hot and breaking down. I allowed it to cool and it tested normal again. Mine was a 62t which should be around 500 ohms cold it was going up to 630 ohms hot. Replaced it problem solved.

I’ve got another full set of 62t electronics I’m going to swap in (currently running 61x). If the problem goes away I’ll start swapping individual pieces and figure out what’s going on.

Pulled the electronics today and noticed about a tablespoon of oil in the bottom of the case under the flywheel cover and a light coating over the entire bendix. Would this make a difference in how it runs? Is this amount a problem? I will put new seals in this winter but didn’t really want to pull it apart this summer if I don’t have to.

The oil probably wont make a difference. I see oily stators all the time on skis that run fine.
