dont buy them.... simple as that

bought a aftermarket starter in august.. paid around $120... last ride was in october

just finished bolting my ski together... just got a click

changed the battery, used jumpers from my van... swaped out the relay

checked all connections

finally pulled the starter, connected it directly to the battery and nothing

will be ordering an OEM starter tomorrow

my oem on my 04 lasted me around 5 years, and to be honest was probably still ok as i had some electrical issues last year and swapped everything out trying to track it down only for it to be the ring gear on the flywheel slipping

aftermarket... lasted around 2 months.....

the magnets are poorly secured and dont have a external sleeved over them at all, they come unglued and crack and lock up the armature......waste of $ the seals suck as well

What flywheel were you using? I did the same thing with my TL, I really got the run around. Tested with new battery, jumped solenoid, voltage drop test, installed new battery wires, pulled starter and opened it up, cleaned and reassembled with 1211 on the starter O-rings, finally I pulled bendix to make sure it wasn't damaged. Still had no cranking, just the wierd straining noise.

Then I had the Mag cover off and held the bendix with my fingers, and tried to crank the motor.............. It was the ring gear slipping.

I am still PO'd I had to crack open a nearly new OEM starter. I have always read once they are opened the seal is compromised.

Cheap and this sport DO NOT go together. You can either pay up front or in the long run.

We always use nothing but the expensive a$$ OEM stuff. But, it rarely breaks.

it was an msd lightweight charging flywheel, we changed every electrical item and only caught it as i had the coupler cover off and we noticed the drive shaft was rotating back and forth an not spinning

we took the flywheel cover off and held the bindex with a socket a nd it looked like it was turning over as we could see the flywheel spinning, but it was just the ring gear spinning

Greater Yamaha has OEM Super Jet starters for $287.12 right now. Thats a smokin deal for OEM. 5 years for $287- that works out to around $60 a year for piece of mind!

http://www.greateryamaha.com/pages/parts/viewbybrand/2/Yamaha.aspx

im just about to order one

the yamaha dealer here in (canada wanted over $550 + taxes, he came down to $475, i told him thanks but ill pay $290 to greater yamaha

we stripped down the starter, it was rusted to f@@k, had leaked and probbaly got salt water in from virginia beach

this starter was fitted maybe two weeks before wavedaze and only ridden for about two weeks after, the insides of the starter looked like it had been sat on the titantic since it sank

after it was cleaned up it works... but im not risking it, it will now become my emergency spare!

Don't remember telling him to buy it. I hadn't done the trouble shooting. A spinning ring gear is a hard thing to solve but I would have got it right away if everyones hands weren't in there. Guess there is only one person we should listen to:dunce: Did you find the ring gear slipping? Hmmm
Steve grab that oem starter maybe it's yours.
