Don't remember telling him to buy it. I hadn't done the trouble shooting. A spinning ring gear is a hard thing to solve but I would have got it right away if everyones hands weren't in there. Guess there is only one person we should listen to:dunce: Did you find the ring gear slipping? Hmmm
Steve grab that oem starter maybe it's yours.

hmmm kinda sounds like another one of yours to me, but your the expert

I have one of the cheap AM ones, but it is an emergency backup.

If you got the time, you can search ebay and find people selling Mitsuba starters for half of what yamaha wants for them. They are the exact same thing. Friend ordered one a few years ago and had me install it. Checked the numbers and they were identical

If you're talking about the DB Electrical starters on Ebay for $150 or so, I would advise caution. I bought one of these because they're touted as OEM Mitsuba.
The casing looks almost identical, but there are some subtle differences.
These are NOT new OEM starters. They are most likely rebuilt. Their electrical properties are quite a bit worse than actual OEM starters.

Don't remember where it came from. It looked just like a New OEM that I had on the shelf. Did not look like it had ever been apart and had the exact same inscriptions (Stampings) on it as the Mitsuba. Think the backup that I have came from DB.

I bought one from DB that's sold as OEM, looks and feels just like a Mitsuba. Except that's it's not quite.

Interesting, I got one from them for the x2 with the mitsuba stamps, been working great. It did not look rebuilt at all and was just over 100 bux

They seem to work great, but they pull a lot more current than a regular OEM does.

I am about to take three starters (new DB, old crusty OEM, and newer SBT) to a starter shop to have them check the current draw.
I bench-tested these three yesterday to see how much battery voltage drops.
The DB Mitsuba was worse than an old crusty, noisy OEM starter.

I do know that some are sold as non mitsuba and some as genuine mitsuba, the listings are very similar

I know they have different listings. I will reserve judgement until I am done at the starter shop, but from what I have seen so far, these are not genuine Mitsuba.

If you ever get inside them, do a very close comparison to see what the exact differences are.

i opened it at your house with your bro there if you remember? i told you it was as fresh as morning but you went and listened to someone else didnt you:dunce:

:booty:

When you out of the blue post comments like that intended to irritate people expect to get somthing in return.
My distributor happens to sell the cheap starters but it didn't cost very much and and he had it the next day. I felt terrible that steve got his ski all ready to fire up and the starter crapped out on him. I stopped what I was doing yesterday and fixed steves starter for him now he has a good solid spare. I hope you never blow an engine thats running the countless A/M gaskets I sold you at cost. Or worse the cylinder boring or countless other favors I've done for you. Probably be all my fault.
Now your just poking to try and get a rise out of me. Why?

That is very good info. Like to hear what the shop says too.
I bought one of DB's cheapies a yr. or two ago and it has crapped out. I got a used OEM from Hardcore I am going to run this season, but I almost got sucked in to buying one of DB's "OEM Mitsuba" starters. I wonder how they can get away with making a direct claim like that if they aren't really OEM specs.

As a rule, DASA uses only OEM starters and Bendix's.

Can you imagine a DNF in a race because of that?

People can complain about the price, or do as you did and be dissapointed.

The money you save just isn't worth it.

Sorry about your troubles.

dont buy them.... simple as that

bought a aftermarket starter in august.. paid around $120... last ride was in october

just finished bolting my ski together... just got a click

changed the battery, used jumpers from my van... swaped out the relay

checked all connections

finally pulled the starter, connected it directly to the battery and nothing

will be ordering an OEM starter tomorrow

my oem on my 04 lasted me around 5 years, and to be honest was probably still ok as i had some electrical issues last year and swapped everything out trying to track it down only for it to be the ring gear on the flywheel slipping

aftermarket... lasted around 2 months.....
