That would be silly to do.
Just wet sand and buff it a bit if it's starting to oxidze... Meguiers and 3m make a good oxidation compound that you just use a buffer with. It will shine it up fast, plus it has a built in wax for protection. Wells for around $10 at Wal-mart. You only really need to wet sand if its really oxidized bad.

Ignore the above comment,I would never scuff with 220 grit to put clear on,more like 400 grit at the roughest 600 would actually suffice,if you do feel it necessary to scuff with 220 prepare to spray a lot of damn clear to cover up the sanding scratches.

Whatever..
Its Gel coat that he's clearing over, not base coat or paint. It will take forever to 400 or 600 a whole gel coated ski. Thats just ridiculous and not needed at all.

A 220 DA will work fine. Red 3M scuff pads for the curved areas. I could do that with 2 coats of clear and you would not see any sanding scratches at all.

Exactly. 220 is REALLY rough.

I was just looking at this on US Composites site. It looks like you can just mix in metal flake and then apply this to get what your after.

What is the method of application for something like this roll? brush?

Clear Metalflake Gelcoat

:fing02:

It's meant to be sprayed, but automotive clear will be much easier to use. Clear gel has poor UV resistance. You'll spray your metal flake/pearl, etc in a clear midcoat and spray clear over that for gloss.

I really want to know why it would take forever to 400 grit the top of a ski? I also want to know how you are 220 grit one with a DA without totally screwing it up the finish, half the surfaces can't be gotten to with a DA to start with.Unless DA +jet ski =dumb azz then it all makes sense.I do concur with Crammit 442 clear gelcoat is a major pain in the azz,it yellows terribly over time, automotive clear is a much better choice.

Its gel coat, its harder than paint and its unecessary. Like I said, I could use 3M 220 grit 6" D/A and clear over that and you would not see a scratch.

I also want to know how you are 220 grit one with a DA without totally screwing it up the finish, half the surfaces can't be gotten to with a DA to start with.

Because its GEL Coat and its thick and I could run a D/A with my eyes closed and not fork up anything. On paint you have to be careful not to burn through, this is gel coat, its 10X thicker.

Unless DA +jet ski =dumb azz then it all makes sense.

Ya, your right. I am a dumb azz as you say. I guess after doing body work for 17 years and owning my own fiberglass repair business for the last 13 years I just get lucky working on the tons of PWC and quarter to 1/2 million dollar boats with rich picky perfectionist owners.

I'm not gonna disrespect you like you just did me. I have more class than that and I'll just leave it at that..

Oh another thing i forgot to add. I'm not talking 220 wood sandpaper from the local hardware store! If that is what your implying, it would leave scratches. I'm talking 3M automotive 220 grit 6" D/A paper. Scuffing paint is a whole different story compared to gel coat. Paint is way softer and I would use 320-400 grit.

Also I could D/A 90% of that ski and scuff pad the rest. I dont know about your D/A, but mine has soft rubber and dense foam padding to be able to sand the curves on a gel coated OEM SX-R.

I have been doing gelcoat and frp repairs for about the same number of years,Your reasoning for roughing up gelcoat with 220 isn't viable,Nuff said.
