Okay I have read through many threads and this is my first post. Great info and helped me a ton. I started on a 750sx that was hammered 2 years ago. Cracked hull broken handle pole and engine with a broken piston. Rebuild it, reinforced it, repainted, fixed the engine. This is how it turned out. FYI I can only afford the jet in the front, not the back. Decided it was kind of a pig and wanted more so I bought a 92 SN SJ that had a 701 twin carb in it. It has a pipe, head. It didn't run, so I rebuild the carbs and electrical, coil and stater, and it runs awesome now. Put foot holds in and repainted it and turfed it. Still seems weak to me though. It is a fun ski and I am just learning but I just wish it had more power. So I have the 750sx and the SJ now that I ride the SJ and my brother rides the 750sx. The 750sx is getting to the point its not really fun to ride anymore so we are thinking of selling it and getting something new. I tried my first back flip last weekend on a v wake with my SJ but it didn't go so well. Came up way short, only made it half way around, but didn't get hurt so I tried again. It was way choppy so it was hard to get the speed I needed and came up short again. (Upside down) Didn't get hurt but broke the steering cable on the SJ. My brother used to ride the 750sx to jump the boat wakes with me but its not as fun as the SJ so nobody wants to ride it now. We are going to sell it and get something better but trying to decide what to get.

I was thinking of just going all out and building a new ski but I am looking for opinions. I am in Utah and looking for something that rides like the superjet. I love the way the SJ rides but would like more power and possibly lighter. I was thinking of spending 10-12k but it looks like that will be short of going all out. From what I see and read it looks like most of the AM hulls or more for doing backflips and tricks and kind of look uncomfortable to ride always bending over. I understand that they are purpose built for tricks but was wondering if there are any aftermarket hulls that ride like a superjet, but are stronger and lighter? We usually take out the Supra boats and the Jet skis. While people are surfing or wake boarding we ride the skis around and then switch off chasing the boat. We also like to go cruise it around Lake Powell chasing boats wakes and do some jumping. We are just learning the tricks as we go. Wanting something that you can cruise WOT on the lake and also jump and in the future do all the tricks. I want to hit the boat wake and do a flip, nose stab, 180, and still cruise the lake and do a sub or two! Thinking of BOB gen 3 but I am not sure I would like them? Also from what I have read maybe a ROK, or Rickter? I get bored fast so I just want to bypass a few steps and get the best. I was thinking of Rickter or Rok or Bob with a 850-950CC engine. But looks like my budget probably won't support that. I am not sure I will like the way they ride and I am not really willing to drive places to test ride hulls. Not much around in Utah County as way of dealers. So my next thought is maybe I should by a 96 or newer SJ, rebuild it with the footholds I like, repaint it, new handle pole, then do the xscream big bore 850 kit? Any thoughts or suggestions? Rickters are very nice all around skis
ive seen some complete skis go for 15k or so built with bb760 and nice parts
Everyone is going to tell you to ride one before you buy it. Every ski rides different so try as many as you can

Thanks. The problem is not many around this part of town to try and ride before I buy one. I keep searching the forums for a AM hull that would ride similar to a SJ but I am thinking they are all going to be so different than my SJ. Anyone around Springville, UT that wants to go to Utah lake to let me try?

They have lightweight superjets too
im sure you can get in contact with some riders around your area and find out when and where the closest event is
fly out to an event and try out all the hulls

The only AM hulls I know of in northern Utah were my ROK-R and one guy with a EME. Just sold my ROK-R but plan on building another AM hull shortly. Your more than welcome to try it when it's done. Feel free to give me a call with any questions.

Really you should ride them, but for superjet handling I think you may want to look into rickters, superfreaks and backy Chan's. A Bob gen3, while a very nice hull, rides nothing like a rec ski

The Watercraft Factory in Florida has a Wamiltons aftermarket SJ hull for sale, looks pretty nice $2500 you can see it on the WCF face book page. I have a-4 Vision from them and its rides great, you might like the full length version based on your description. I know these are not in Utah but I thought I mention.

my buddy has a -2 first gen superfreak. pretty much a carbon superjet. weighs 55lbs and SOARS with a 701 in it. he was wanting to sell it earlier this year, but didnt sell.

Dont pin yourself to (SOMETHING LIKE AN SJ) I promise that 5 rides into most hulls you will like them better than a barge we call SJ's.
If you want something you will feel close to at home on quickly then the heavy azz high $ Rickter will do for a short time until you realize you live miles from surf where this hulls weight is useful somewhat. Go light, go short now or you will want to upgrade again sooner. Go with a used superfreak hull or better yet, in flatwater go for a KDX these are PROVEN lightweight hulls if you go carbon fiber on either.
PROVEN GREAT BOATS AND PROVEN STRONG HULLS. You will love them in a matter of hrs.
The freak IMO desires more power but is a better all around high speed or freestyle hull. The kdx needs less power and pops in freestyle flatwater better but is a little tougher to get the hang of at first. BUT YOU WILL.

Dont buy something like an SJ bro, they are barges to all who own aftermarket hulls for flatwater use.
If your gonna go for something like SJ just modify your current hull and save 6-7,000$

What I hear you saying is that you want to ride for a long distance chasing boats etc and occasionally toss in a trick, right?

From what i've been on, a -4.3 carbon super freak would probably be the best hull to do all the things you list really well, but I don't see you getting a complete ski for 10k in a freak unfortunately. Well, maybe a glass Titan one from Thrust? Not sure.

Heres the deal though.... If you can get to Havasu for World Finals in Oct, you'll have a chance to ride a LOT of skis and generate your own opinion, not listen to a bunch of keyboard cowboys tell you what to get LMAO.

I know there are supposed to be some new hulls debuting at WF, Trendsetterz is supposed to have a "Huck Norris" that is a freeride style, light SJ kinda hull. But nobody has seen it cause Steve is keeping it a secret... lol :dunno:
I'm sure there are more mfgs that will have new and existing stuff to try out. Since I own a Backie Chan, I guess I keep up with what Steve is coming out with.

I own a a superjet and like freaks so im non bias from the owning side. But definitely try sone skis at world finals. Only thibg Is thst your setup might not be as close, so trie riding combos of skis closer to what you can actually build

Thanks everyone for the input! Everyone has good ideas. I am going to keep reading and try and figure out what I am doing this winter. I know one thing for sure I am getting rid of my Kawi 750sx and keeping my SN SJ. I just need a second ski because going by yourself is no fun!

I came from an SXR and was looking for the same thing you are now... Ended up with a Rickter FS-2. I would certainly check one out. I don't think you would be disappointed. I really enjoyed mine.

I am exactly in the same predicament as yourself. I run a modded 701 RN SJ for my buddies and have a 900cc BOB gen2 for myself. To tell ya the truth, i much more like riding the SJ. I am completely unbiased, but the power in the BOB made it more impressive then it really was. And overall Ride-ability is what you are after, like myself, i am not trying to do 540's and tripple backflips on completely flat water, but like a few fun stunts or wanting to do flips off boat wakes.
these -6 to -12 hulls are somewhat limited to just clowning around at 3mph and backflips IMO.
needless to say I am ditching my BOB as its not for me, am going to build an FS-2 EVO as i hear its closer to SJ rideability, but lighter, but who knows...right? I think sometimes these AM hulls are more like a fashion statement.
One big thing to think about IMO is how much R & D have been done with these AM hulls? Also i can see from your photo, you have a high standard of quality (like myself) and some of these AM hulls wouldn't make the grade.
There is a reason most AM hulls are SJ based... Its because it works well. But they have to make it slightly different, create a lot of hype and claim outlandish results, or else no one would buy it right!?
Its also hard to try a lot of hulls as the power trains are all so different, so actual hull performance would be tricky to assess unless someone had a whole lineup with 701's in them. Hopefully the EVO works out, or i'll be transfering all the guts back to a RN SJ, and the only hull mod i'd do is cut 2-3 inch off it.

I've been trying to research this same thing. I want to get an AM hull in the next couple of years but I dont have access to riding any since I live in CO. I've seen one bob on the lakes. the rest of the skis are 650sx and SJ's. I'm sure you've seen this video but I thought it was cool what rickter XSF's can still do with a stock 701. skip to 4:10 into the vid to see. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JjuD06hQEVs I heard one issue with rickters is that the gel coat flakes off like crazy, but like I said, I haven't seen one in person.
