Just ordered it! Hopefully this will help me choose where to start putting money. I know now is a good time to invest I just do not know where to start and I do not know if I can trust a financial adviser or at least how to tell if they are good or not.. I also plan on hiring an accountant this new year...

Haha, i paid $3800 for my truck. Its a 2001 ford f150 2wd strip down regular cab which is great for work/lake cause of the rubber floorboard. I bought it off a older mexican that could speak about 2 words english, he kept it spotless even with a seat cover. I yanked the cover off and the seat looks nice. Its the most content i've been with a vehicle in a long time. It was funny trying to negotiate with him.

When you interview an adviser, they should want to teach you so you can make your own decisions, not push you into their recommendations (read: highest commissions for them).

Why didn't we learn about this kind of stuff in school..? I have worked for what I wanted since my dad showed me how to work the lawnmower when I was 8. But I never quite ever got the whole saving money concept. I knew I needed to but I have always just blown it on stupid stuff... or expensive toys. Now I want to start saving for retirement but I am not sure what I should start up? Roth IRA...? Mutual funds...? Stocks? at 24 where is the best place to start?

Sounds exactly like me. I mowed lawns every summer and busted my but from 10 until 22. I also had a paper route for about 8 years. You'd think all that tax free money from mowing lawns I made those years would be looking good in some kind of investment huh? Nope, I blew it all on stupid stuff like food, beer, girls, my old 4-wheeler/parts, ect... Then I spent an extra 4 years in college since I transfered schools. I get down on myself thinking how much money I lost in salary because of that. I wonder where I would be now if I didn't rack up the debt I had and spending the extra 4 years in school. Then again I wouldn't be where I am now if it wasn't for those extra 4 years in school.

But I will say I didn't get the kind of financial education from my parents I should have. My parents would usually fight about money. My dad would want something and my mom wouldn't let him buy it. So he would sneak off and get it anyway. I was taught to work hard and I would have money for the things I wanted. I always had more money than most of my friends because I always worked for it. But I was never taught about saving and investing. I was taught about bank accounts and that I should save/put my money in them but that never worked. Then after getting in debt, I just gave up on the working hard part. I feel like I could have been so much farther ahead in life if I was just taught a little better from my parents. The same thing about money can be said about the college thing. I didn't have a lot of help there and chose the wromng school to go to. After 4 years it was already too late and I had to start over. SUCKS!

But it just takes a min or two talking to some people I grew up with to realize I am a lot better off than they are!

one of my new years resolutions is to manage my money better so I am trying to start up now. Lots of good info on here and I am looking forward to getting this book. I have been researching a lot of different stocks today also. I do not want to work when I'm old!!!

So back to that emergency money fund....

I had to tap it today. It turned out that a 5 foot section of my main sewer line was packed solid with roots. At some point the original sewer was replaced by ABS pipe, but they stopped 10 feet short of the street. My assumption is they didn't feel like tunneling under the sidewalk. We dug down about 6 feet on each side of the sidewalk, cut out the offending pieces of original terracotta pipe and ABS pipe, then spliced in a new section of PVC with an additional cleanout. I took it up the a$$ on that one... Merry Xmas to me to the tune of $1500. Well at least the sewer will outlast the house now.

When it rains, it pours.

Hot water heater on Tuesday, transmission on van last night.

Last night sucked, we went to visit my Mom in Illinois about 4 hours away, and on the way back the transmission went out, in the middle of nowhere. It went into limp mode so I was able to drive about 45mph for 10-15 miles on the highway to a major exit with 3 huge travel centers. My Mom hopped in her van, came and picked us up (all 5 of us) then ferried us home to Louisville. We got home around 2am.

Mom rocks, even to a 39 year old father and our kids just rolled with things.

Anyone know a good transmission place in Evansville, IN?

I hope this won't cost you all that much.
I blew a transmission in our 97 Blazer a few years ago. It was the first and only time that I had an extended warranty on a vehicle. They mandated a Chevy Rebuilt transmission. The bill that I saw from the dealership came to $4,500, approximately.
I am sure you can get it much cheaper than that elsewhere - rebuilding your existing transmission, buying a used one, or buying aftermarket.
All that said, when I was looking for a van a few months ago, I didn't go the Chrysler route because of potential transmission problems.

We had an electrical problem surface last month that was preventing the torque converter from locking up, but decided to keep driving it. We had a quote for $2000 for a complete rebuild from the transmission place that our mechanic uses, and it's a very reputable place close to our house.

The problem is the van is 120 miles from here.

Chrysler van transmissions haven't been 'bad' since the mid 90's, but the reputation has stuck. Our's is not a normal problem.

I hope this won't cost you all that much.

Pull the codes on the transmission. Maybe it's something that won't cost an arm and a leg.

Yeah, it's more just the logistics of finding a reputable place to fix it there, getting it towed and done, all during the week of Christmas.

I'm sure you could hook up with a local tow truck driver and offer him some cash for a "special" trip.
Who couldn't use a few extra bucks right about now.
Once you get the van home you can do some trouble shooting and/or repairs on your own time.
