Super Jet Detonation

i had the same issue on my ss 850. ran good all summer then blew up. rebuilt it and it blew up again. My carb filters in the carb were plugged. cleaned everything out and rebuilt it AGAIN ugh and its been good ever since *knocks on wood*. I also cut my domes a tiny bit to lower compression to 180* and i run 50/50 vp 110 and 91 oct pump just for cheap insurance.

With the new 37cc ADA domes I was getting around .034 front cylinder and .026 rear cylinder. So I put the old 36cc domes in and was getting .04 front and .03 rear. Seems a bit tight to me?

I cut apart the waterbox, after finding a pic of a pre 08 waterbox online they don't look too different.. 2 small 1/2" holes on the bottom for water transfer between the baffle plate and 2x 1 1/2" pipes on the top. It looks like some exhaust travels through those 1/2" holes on the bottom as well, just following the tracks of carbon tells me that. Im not sure yet how im going to modify it, I just want it to have a little deeper sound to it and not obnoxiously loud.
Your squish is too tight, rule of thumb is .045"

Yea I know I put a .040" base gasket and cured that but ended up with a 4 point seize on the rear cylinder a few hours on the new top end. No sign of deto this time, piston wash looked good. I ended up buying a new ski.. I bought a full stock driveline to drop in this hull. I'm furious after this season to say the least. Same sleeve dropped twice on old motor, a melted piston and a seized piston. Big bore isn't happening anytime soon.

Your not getting rid of the heat fast enough that's why it did a 4 point seize. opening up your squish that much lowered the thermal efficiency of your ski and will mask the issue that your engine was suffering from.

Don't worry he solved it. Buy a new ski and sell everything. Easy fix$$$$

Yep, im loving the new ski too. The kawi motor makes nice power, actually not too shabby off idle. Going to play a little with the pump nozzle/cone and then maybe play with dropping the cylinder over the Winter just to see. No rush though, im enjoying the no hassle limited set up.

Do you have pictures of the waterbox inside? I've looked online and can't find anything of the baffles. I looked into my RN waterbox and only see 2 3/8" holes on the bottom. I can't see anything on the top, or at least the baffle looks solid up there. I'm using a flashlight and a mirror on the outlet side so I am of course a bit limited on what I can see in there. Looks like there is only the one baffle plate too.

It's been a while since I had that waterbox apart. It definitely is only one baffle plate. I remember 2 small holes on the top and a even smaller hole on the bottom in direct path of exhaust flow. I did open up a hole or two and had it welded back together. The ski sounded great, it sounded throaty.

Just a question out of curiosity, because I plan to build a big bore this winter but was anyone running custom cut domes to make up for the extra cc. Correct me if I am wrong but if you ran 760 domes on 771 would that not put your very outer squish band at a crazy tight tolerance causing the detonation?
