do i need to put anything between the case halves?

I should have searched, but I didn't. getting a new crank this weekend. and going back together with the cases. ive done pretty much all sorts or engine rebuilding except put cases together. this is my first time doing this. what should I put in between the case halves when re assembling the crank case? any kind of sealer or locktite?

Threebond 1211, Hondabond, Yamabond. All are silicone based sealants. You should be able to get any of them off amazon or at your local powersports dealer. Make sure your case mating edges are CLEAN and then apply a bead no larger than 1/8" in diameter to one of the case halves and smooth it to a THIN film. Assemble your cases and wait 24 hours before you pressure test. Some people put it on their crank seals where they fit in the cases, others put the seals in dry. I prefer dry seals and if the edge of one leaks then I'll go back and redo the cases and the seals.

Our local Yamaha dealer advised us that the Yamabond formula was changed (EPA) and that it's not as good now. Local builder advised Hondabond and it's worked great the past couple years for us local guys. 1211 is great stuff but cost more and Hondabond $7 works.

I put magic beans between them that crush and form a paste when I properly torque case bolts.

Just kidding. 1211 here. I buy two tubes every winter and use it up all year. Works great for stator cover gaskets and stator wire grommets as well.

I just separated a set of case halves from a gp1200r and found they used a red product that has remained almost jelly like. It still smears with a finger but it forms a thick glob that won't come off and get stuck in the crank or piston skirt like other gasket makers can.

I normally use 1211 but I'm liking how this red stuff sets up as it poses much less risk of bits coming free inside the cases if you happen to put on too much.

Is this one of the already mentioned products or have the cases been spot since the factory build it and I'm looking at whatever some backyard mechanic used to put it back together? It certainly looked like a factory sealed engine to me but I could be wrong.

That looks like Loctite 518 to me. Sea-Doo used it back in the early days. IMO not good for case sealing.

Regular thread. Heat it a bit and use a coupler tool, or pry bar. Pops right off. Make sure to use a flywheel lock or a rope down one cylinder to stop the crank from spinning though.

Or in your case if the crank is removed from the cases already and is wrecked just clamp it in a vise. It's junk anyway.
