Freestyle Don't forget your registration!!

No Fire extinguisher, No USCG approved vest, No CF numbers, No registration or DL (yes make a photocopy and carry it).......ALL these are Minor citations and "fix it" tickets.....However as Motoman already stated, a Ski with no HIN Tags is serious chit as it could most likely be stolen. The cops don't know so they will act as if it was stolen until you can prove is yours. They are doing their Job....

So much for innocent until proven guilty.

I have utmost respect for cops and law enforcement, and am nothing but respectful to them regardless of if I'm in the wrong or not. However we've all seen cops flip on their lights and run a red only to to turn them off on the other side, maybe he has somewhere he needs to be, or maybe he doesn't feel like stopping.

I, with little to no understanding of the law in this case, feel that impounding is excessive. I do also wonder what prompted the cops to be at the ramp? Boat saw no CF's and called it in?
Impound would make sense if there were a report of stolen skis that match the description, but look at zack's ski. Who else could rock that scheme?

I've had a motorcycle towed for parking illegally. Most expensive dinner ever, getting that out. Shame on me yes, but a parking ticket wasn't sufficient? not like I was in anyones way.

Yes we love them when they do their jobs and we aren't the focus of the penalties, we hate them when we are the focus.

Law is the law, we don't have to and typically don't agree with it, but sadly we have to either respect it, or go through propper steps to change it.

what rock did you crawl out from under?

Get a grip, man!!!

I'm fully aware.
I say it frequently, look at any moving violation, you're given a ticket and forced to pay unless you prove your innocents in front of a judge (been there, done that).
Some of the younger riders may not have had the opportunity to see the world as it truly is. that's all.

pics behind fence just scary, think i would camp at the inpound ..not the first time stuff went missing there...

NV its easy bring the ski down to department of wildlife, claim it as home built bring some pictures and some receipts bam you get the title and reg for $ 40 then go to local trphy shop and have them make your hull vins $ 15....f

Were they arrested and charged with the theft of the skis? No! Why? Because they ARE innocent until proven guilty. It is however standard practice to seize the items in question until that determination can be made, otherwise there is nothing they can do later and if found to be actually stolen, they are long gone and unrecoverable.

The really funny thing about this whole little story is that if the skis were actually stolen, those cops would be our heroes right now. They were doing their jobs.

If you really don't like interacting with the police, don't give them a chance to "do their jobs".

riding in oceanside the police are usually mellow and normally give us warnings. i have had a few myself from cf numbers being in the wrong spot. they are usually nice and some are interested in what we do. however one is a huge a$$. i saw the guy in one of their pictures. for some reason he is the only one out of oceanside police and harbor patrol that has it out for us. i don't know where her gets off being rude to us i just feel like he should be checking the fishermen before he comes in hot on us.

There truly is one in every precinct. My hometown had a cop who would camp out at the highschool and bust everybody for every little thing. Another town had one officer who wrote 80% of all moving violations annually. In each case, the other officers allowed it because it put all the heat on one officer. They called it "good cop, dick cop".

I'm in no means arguing that fact. like i said above, we love them when we aren't the victim and hate them when we are, a fact of life. and as i said, if the skis matched a stolen vehicle description, than i could better understand. anyway, glad the skis are getting out soon enough so they can be flushed out and cleaned up, rather than sitting in a lot for month(s) on end with salt in the motors and on the components.

Try driving a car without plates down the highway. And once you get pulled over, tell them you don't have registration, VIN, title, or any other document establishing ownership. I guarantee a fancy paint job won't get you out of that mess.
Why did they impound? Because they can. Don't give them a reason to switch to dick mode, don't give them a reason to exercise their full powers.

talking with friends that know 80% of the harbor cops, the 1 white haired guys is the biggest "dickhead" there. he is gung ho on going all the way with the law. we got lucky to get him. lol

the whole reason this happened was because a coastguard volunteer held us at the ramp until the cops came. the cops took 45 mins to even get to us. he was even trying to persuade the cops to do a "military coast guard check" which i guess a MP would come see the skis or whatever, telling the cops we could be looking at 6K in fines..... great guy.

the thing that pisses me off is being treated like i am a criminal. when i got my ski last night the cop said " the biggest reason your getting your ski back is because you gave me a paper from germany with the HIN on it and that the words were in german."........ facepalm. " we have your information for you as a person and on the ski as well so if it infact does come up that this is a stolen ski and you arnt the owner, we know how to find you" like REALLY, after PROVING to you it is mine, you still dont believe me. cool. im a criminal i guess.

we heading back to get jakes and get stans right now.

Every now and then you find one that loves taking it as far as he can. And the best part? There isn't a damn thing you can do about it.

But....it's best to be prepared and all legal so that those guys get shut down before they start

Glad it's working out zack, Mr. Flippy rides again!
I'll need to join in the next oside event, just have to develope some confidence in my ski after the pismo issue. I've fired it up a few time and she's holding together, I'm trying to get my pool cleaned up so i can drop it in and let it get warmed up before taking a drive.

My 2 biggest fears about being in the sport is having my ski sink to the bottom to never be found, and being impounded. Seeing this whole thing develop with Zack, Jake and Stan has seriously reminded me to throw some Reg decals on mine and my pops new hulls, maybe even keep some photo copies of the paper work with the hull.

We haven't had to worry about it too much as one of the sheriffs in our area is a very good friend of ours, but we have occasionally gotten the po-po's that don't like skis.

Best of luck to Stanton and Jake on getting their skis back! I'd probably be crying if I saw my brand new ski sitting behind a locked gate, lol.
