Dual Fuel Tanks

I just bought a XFS with a 785 big bore with single 46mm carb and RRP 1.5 gallon rear fuel tank. I don't want to limit my rides to around 30 minutes so I'd like to add a 3 gallon kart tank or stock SJ tank. I haven't found any detailed posts and am wondering how to do the set up and what I need to get and how it will work - i.e. do I need to switch from one to the other?

Alternatively, I can add an SJ stock tank and leave the RRP disconnected at the rear, just seems weird to keep it there and I don't want to remove it...

Thanks for the help!

if you have room just use a stock sj tank and use the rrp tank as res. that way if you want to stay out you have a large tank and if you want to free style you can just not put so much gas in the front tank or just runn of the rear tank. i would not think that the added weight from a empty stock tank would kill your ability to do what you want.

just use a stock fuel selector switch and put one tank on the ON and the other tank on the RES. Personally I would do a Jazz and then the RRP. A stock fuel tank plus RRP, you must be a marathon runner and cross fit extraordinaire, or whatever to have that kind of riding stamina!

So the two tanks would feed into the switch, and then the switch has single feed to the carbs (selecting between which tank you want to use).

specially since you are running single carb

I just happened to ask this very question when test riding Brandons ski with 2 tanks at WaveDaze.

Hit up TCFreeride for how they set them up, but it seemed like the front tank fed the rear tank through tank pressure, carbs pull from the rear tank.

I've heard you can connect through vent line to the other tank.
You can also run another fuel selector switch (tee the line to the carb). When you feel it cut out the first time switch to the second tank to prime the line. I use a two gallon to get to my spot then I have a full 5 gallons (sxr is thirsty compared to a superjet).

I forgot to mention put a tee on the return line (for each tank) and put an in line shut off valve on each line, also turn the first selector switch off.
Otherwise it might return to the empty tank. I had that happen before and learned the hard way. The only thing that sucks with this method is you have to pull into shore to switch return lines. I'm sure there is a way to mount the shut off valve on the dash, though.

I'm sure T Curtis's way is more efficient and smarter. I just like to know when I'm out of the 2 gallon tank - mine is an aluminum tank (20 minutes usually, depending on WOT).

Pickup/out line from one tank into an inlet on the other, out from that one into fuel pump. Plug the vent on the second one. No switching.

I'm a visual kinda person, anyone care to diagram these setups? I like the idea of a switch to use the rear tank as a reserve so I know when I'm using my last bit of fuel. Nice XFS, btw, how can you keep it so white?!

The stock SJ fuel routing uses two pickups (one longer than the other) to feed the two inlets on the fuel switch (one for on and one for res) with one outlet to the carbs. All you would do is run one tank to one inlet on the switch and one tank to the other.

Only problem with that is the return from the carbs.

If you return to the main tank, then you go to reserve, you are not putting the excess fuel to the current reserve. Thus running low and switching back to the On/Main tank position to get the last bit of fuel.

If you return to the reserve tank, while you are running in the On/Main tank you are putting excess fuel to the reserve tank (that is already full) eventually overfilling and venting liquid fuel out the vent.

If you T the return then you still have half the issue of the first point I made.

Im thinking the best way to do it..

1. The larger SJ tank will have a fuel line running to the RRP tank. The SJ tank has the vent blocked off, with the return going here. Pressure will carry fuel to the smaller RRP tank.

2. The smaller RRP tank has both a ON and RESERVE pick up tubes with a vent. Everything here is set up just like it normally is; with the exception of a added nipple for transfer of fuel from the larger tank. The vent here should prevent the whole system from over pressurizing and flooding the engine.

I dont think there would be any problem reversing the whole thing. I just think it would be nicer to get the front heavy fuel out first.

Am I thinking about this right? The smaller RRP should stay full until the Superjet tank is empty. At that point once the RRP is like half full, you will have to switch to reserve like normal. And I must be a marathon runner, bc I burn 6.5 gallons in the surf over 2-3 hours straight. Im getting a bit tired of carrying out a extra 2.5 gallon can on the front of the tray. That RRP rear tank is a awesome thing. I probably gotta make my own
