Electrical

I know, you all told me, but I would'nt believe it. I appologize for continuing this issue with another thread.

I've been thru the carbs,(they're good), My exhaust is wasted,(another on the way), But it comes down to electrical.

Symptoms: Runs as good as ever for as long as I can ride without shutting it off.

If I wipe and it dies, or if I kill it after a while, it won't start again. It's not a cooling issue: it happened on the hose and the head lasered at 118 degrees.

No spark after it gets warm. (in the driveway on the hose)!!!!!!

I realize that this could be a number of things. Just looking for a fellow rider that might cut my diagnostic time short.

I've had coils do this in outboard motors.

Could this be a problem with the stator?

As simple as plug wires?

I want to ride A.S.A.P. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Thanx in advance,

Dan

I had a similar problem on my 96. It wouldn't fire up before I left the house till I swapped the plugs, didn't think much of it, that day it ran great for the better part of the day, then it just died. Towed it in and cranked on it awhile with new plugs again and finally got it to fire up and it ran great the rest of the day. Just before the next trip it wouldn't fire up on the trailer again. I trimmed back the plug wires with no effect and then swapped out the Riva CDI for a MSD Enhancer and it hasn't missed a beat since.

I haven't read the other thread so I don't know what all you changed out already but I keep a spare enhancer with me at all times. I've had one failed OEM CDI and now the one failed Riva one. I have never had an Enhancer go bad on me yet, (knock on wood).

i never had a stocker go bad but i had a riva one a while back that did weird stuff.since this problem seems heat related i would go the stator route first.i have seen this type of intermittent problem with the stator on motorcycles before.

stator or plug wires... i've had bad plug wires before (oem) as well as carb issues. chasing ghosts sucks but it's a necessary evil unfortunately.

I would unplug your stop side of the start switch before going to crazy. It only takes about 7 seconds start to finish to check. And it WILL KILL SPARK if somethings going bad. Had a 96 superjet run perfect when it would start then someone would fall off and it would not start and had to be towed in, unhooked stop side and it started right back up and has run perfect since. (yes we found the problem with the wire and fixed it)

Dan,

I have an entire e-box I can send you with a stator and flywheel to trouble shoot with. It's 61x electronics so you'd have to swap the flywheel if you're still using 62t stuff.

Thanx much, but I should be able to get it figured out with resistance checks. I got a link to the sj service manual from a thread here on the "x" a while ago....It's gonna come in handy.

Everything will probably check out fine if the engine is cold though. Or is that wrong?
The manual has detailed instructions for coil test, stator test etc...

If your problem only comes up when its warm you probably won't find anything wrong when it's cold. Ohm it when its cold. Heat it up, and see where the difference is. Did you disconnect the black/white on the start stop switch? My friend had the same problem, and it turned out to be where the wires connected to his ebox. They were frayed, and shorting out. It would always start when it was cold too, but not start after riding around some. Heat may have not been a factor in his case though. Maybe just the wires getting wet.

Yes, did that at the spot last time it crapped down there.

I don't know how to do the "multiple reply" thing, so here it goes.....

jetski9010: If I can't fix this w/o sending it out....I should take up basket weaving.

AdamOntario: been there, done that. But that seems to be the most common response.

SUPERTUNE is someone that, I've been told, REALLY knows his stuff. And I've done everything on both sides of the motor. The coil resistance test and the stator test are pretty much all that's left.
I WILL get it fixed. Just not in time for the storm waves.
But, I thank all of you for your input/help.
I'll post what I find.

Not sure if this relates or not: I have seen several riders lately have to run a ground wire from the ebox to the motor.
Again, doe not sound like your issue, but it only takes a few min to put that wire in place.

Water + electronics = issues
