Engine Runs, No Forward Propulsion

Can I get replacement bolts for the flywheel cover at my local hardware store? Are they 17mm? Can't find any specs via the part #. There are a bunch of bolts that are either missing or the wrong size

I ordered a few parts to replace including the pump seal. Yesterday I temporarily sealed it with 5200 so today I'll find out if that was the culprit. I'm learning a bunch as I go and doing things myself but hey.. It beats paying triple at the shop.

Got a X2 once with a pump installed with 5200. Took almost over 1 hour to get the pump out of the hull *after* the hardware was already removed.

Yes, stainless is stainless, except the bolts at the hardware store are new and the ones on the skis are used. Be sure to put something on the brand new bolts to prevent galling. Never had a problem with OEM bolts new or used but did have a new bolt from ACE cold weld itself to the handle bars on my GP1200. I was test fitting things so I hadn't put anti-seize on it yet.

Also OEM bolts have the washers and stuff pre-installed so you don't have to worry about misplacing them when you work on it later.

If it were worn slipping spines you'd think there would be a secondary symptom of noise as the splines slip past each other
First time my driveline stripped only noise was motor. Second time it has barely stripped and you could hear the spline slipping.

Grrrr this totally blows. One of the starter bolts is even missing and I discovered a few more bolts missing from the crankcase. I swear this guy did such a half ass job swapping motors it's starting to piss me off.

The starter is no bueno. gear is stripped at tip . You need a total teardown and replace with minty used oem parts as needed, they are actually easy to find right here on the X it will save you money in the long run . Good luck

Yup I pulled the motor today and swapped out the starter with a spare I had laying around. The battery was low so the engine wasn't turning over but at least the bendix engages the flywheel properly now. However, after charging up the battery all I hear now is the relay click when trying to start. I sure hope I didn't fry the new starter.. :(

Didnt you pull the midshaft while the motor was out? looks like the seal has an issue in blownup picture then check splines, bearings etc.

No I didn't get the chance to pull the mid shaft yet. I'll do that soon though especially if the pump seal doesn't fix my problem. I'm getting a replacement inter housing anyways and gonna realign as well so I'm holding off for the time being.
However, I noticed that after I sealed the pump and started her up, the exhaust shot out a bunch of water. Kinda like when you flush it out for a few seconds after being in water. I haven't been able to flush it like that the few times I've taken it to the lake which leads me to believe the pump seal is creating proper suction and air tight seal. Before the starter died I was only able to get it running for a second or two before it bogged out on me. Spits a quart or so of water followed by thick smoke and a bit of black oil dripping out from exhaust. My starter comes in Wednesday so in the mean time I'm rebuilding the carbs with a spare Mikuni kit I have and hopefully that will stop the engine from stalling on me. Prolly gonna tune the jets as well if I can get the damn thing to the lake without discovering more blockers lol

RN water boxes hold a lot of water and clear on start up dumping a lot of water normally like you described. Not seen a SQUARE NOSE clear the water box but I'd imagine it'd be the same...

You could prolly verify spline by holding the drive shaft with a rag and channel
Locks and belt wrench or rag and channel locks on coupler and see if they can be twisted independent of each other

So I swapped out the internals of the starter with the housing of the OEM one that had a stripped gear. Works great even though I just ordered a used starter today. And the bogging out problem was because the main fuel line got disconnected lol Tomorrow will be my first chance to finally take it for a spin

You can never have too many starters laying around, i tend to go through one every couple years..and its always at the worst possible time. Losing ride time for a such a easy part to have on hand sucks.

Guys do I have the cooling lines setup correctly? The one on top goes to the pisser and the one on bottom goes to the head.
Also I can't remember where the white hose (I think it's the pump hose?) coming through the right side of of the hull hooks to. I could've sworn it connected somewhere under the manifold but I can't find any fitting to hook it into. IMG_4796.JPGIMG_4797.JPG

Quick update: after replacing the pump seal (thanks JetManiac!) the ski hooks up flawlessly! I also disconnected the thermo switch from the CDI which was causing it to stay in limp mode. Picking up a PSI pipe today too :) All I need now are some pepe's to ride with. If anyone lives in the Oakland County Michigan area hit me up!

Make sure to rejet carb when you add the new pipe.
