finally got to ride with my new epic cdi. it randomly shut the motor down around 5000 rpm's. never happened while fully on the gas but when blipping or coming off throttle. it happened about 10x over the course of the day. even happened while others were riding it. feels like the lanyard gets pulled, the motor just stops dead. refires instantly. ?????? any idea on what is going on

lee, i would start with pulling the start stop switch apart, opening up the switches themselves, cleaning them out and putting some dielectric grease inside them. see if thats the problem, also check the connectors for the start stop. hope this helps

The stock start stop switch makes a connection between two wires to kill the engine. So if his switch is bad or the connection is bad the ski would just keep running.

my setup is on a 08 sj with perfect parts. i did dielectric grease everything. i was wondering if some how some wire is hitting another and causing it to close or open a circuit?

Just FYI, I'm having the same issue with my EPIC. I have pulled apart my switch...checked everything. I was told the pc connection cable may be the source, that is might be bumping to ground in the ebox. I haven't pulled it apart yet.

interesting! mine did that a few times but was mostly breaking up thoughout the rpm range. I ended up sending the unit and my stator back to cris for testing

let me know if you find out. my pc connection is just inside my cap. so i know it is only touching the red fuse wire if anything.
it really sucks when your hauling ass for a buoy and the boat shuts down throwing you over the bars : )

If the engine re-fires instantly it seems like the stop circuit is being activated, if you are sure the program connector is clear of ground or taped up try dis connecting the stop connector and ride like that to see if it stops the problem. You may want to turn the tickover down as you will have no way of turning off the engine.

i will open the box and take a look to see if it is touching a ground wire. but as far as i remember it is not. 100% sure it is not from my start/stop switch. i just removed the msd enhancer and installed the epic. this type issue has never occured on any of my yamaha's in the past. i was also in fresh water when this was happening.

I know after working things out with my EPIC/ & now Flame system your components have to be 100% perfect. With the EPIC I found that the stator, FW, etc had to be perfect to get the ski 100%.

On my Flame I had to replace ground cable, terminal ends, to keep my voltage up when cranking the engine. All my stuff looked better than new from the outside, but still was an issue.

Also the MSD enhancers will run with anything, so you can't really use that to compare when dealing with the EPIC.

Still worth every penny, Best improvement for the $$$. IMO

i understand, but my sj has less than 50 hours on all new parts, stored in doors, never sank, i don't do freestyle tricks. it has spent most of its life having major hull mods. my feeling i something is grounding out since it is very sporadic and nothing i was doing could replicate the engine quitting.

Are you running resistor spark plugs? How about the caps?
The Advents did that all the time... if you ran the stock SJ non-resistor caps and non resistor plugs.
Putting in BR plugs in cured the RF problem the Advent was picking up.
You might try that.

i will verify the plugs to be sure, but pretty positive they are br9es. i am running the stock yami plug caps.

Odd that you post this today. I had my ski do this exact thing in the surf. It fired right up so i thought I just had bumped the stop button or something. I forgot to mention it to a buddy when we swapped skis and his did the same thing to me. Both skis are running EPICS and only did it once each.

I will mention this to Scott and check my program lead for ground. I know Scott's won't ground out, his has a plastic cap snuggly pressed over the end of his program plug.

this is the prob with all analog to dig converter igns so far, they are sensitive to everything. Sounds like some of the epics are having the same issues with almost brand new elecs though?
