Just got my cylinder back to the shop and damn is it nice! Just another option offered by Powerhouse.....

Whats something like that cost to get done (out of curiosity), I had no idea what this was till I read up on it after seeing your post.

More specifically, why plate sleeves with Nikasil? I thought it was one or the other.
benefits are less internal friction on the piston to wall interface which means more of the combustion explosion goes into force on the rod vs. wasted heat friction in the sleeve or piston. We also build cr500 engines for mini winged outlaw circle track cars. You can imagine these guys are looking to squeeze every last bit out of a 500cc engine. Our full on race cylinders with nikasil consistently will pull quicker lap times than a standard sleeve engine without building as much heat while getting thrashed on. Another benefit directly related to all of us is the cylinder scuffing that can be encountered with water ingestion. When you take water through your engine, for that brief time the oil is for the most part steam cleaned off the side of the piston and cylinder wall. In a normal configuration the sleeve material is much softer than what the rings are and requires a good amount of oil to keep the rings from cutting into the sleeve. When the oil goes away the ring cuts in and leaves vertical score line that loose compression and performance on your engine. On a nikasil treated cylinder this is much less likely to occur because of how much harder the surface is. Two extremely hard surfaces slide over one another much easier without as much lube required to reduce friction. Much of the same way ceramic crank bearings don't require as much premix oil (also used in the cr500 race cars). The last thing it does is give longer cylinder life before a rebore is needed because the bore itself does not wear nearly as fast as a standard cast iron bore does...and you can stay am legal at 898 forever if you so choose;)

the yamaha gp1200/1300 and the 800 alll have nicasil cylinders . Although Nicasil will dissapate heat better and allow for less friction to happen, the down side is that if it fails, it has to be re-nicasiled which can become quite expensive and inconvenient.

Those cylinders don't have sleeves, either.

$325 is what it cost to take my perfectly good cylinder and have it done in Nikasil. Total cost
