i believe it helps you set your static timing more precisely

Yep,

if ur pushing it to the edge with 30*+ advance u don't want to be guesstimating with the marks on the wheel. If ur going soft with 20-25* u can get away with the big marks on the wheel. My thought is that ur using TL to get that last bit of performance you might as well push it and get it all. To each his own...

Yes if your going 25 and lower don't worry about a gauge if your going 25 and up use it it way worth it especially at 34 degrees advance and your builder says don't go any farther

I picked up the foulers Matt linked to and a dial gauge from HF this weekend. I'm going to crack my fly wheel cover open this week and hopefully get to setting the thing up.

I may be getting ahead of my self, but, should I stray much from the default setup in the instruction manual? I am looking to get as much bottom end punch as possible, and will essentially never be WOT.

My setup is pretty basic.
-38's jetted for B-pipe
-B-Pipe
-701 with 37cc domes (175psi)
-Solas mag 144 w/stubby cone, 9/15 hooker prop.
-Carbon Superfreak

I guess it is better to find out the limits of advancing time on a getting tired 701 than a fresh new big piston build. I'll just use that as my excuse for not having a sicko beast engine yet.

Yes, it's a slope reduction down to 16 degrees. but way before the rev limit! Please, look up suggested curves or you will grenade it.

I don't know where to find them for my engine setup! :-( Otherwise I would. Best I know is the suggested starting settings from the MSD setup instructions.

Here's a typical curve for the Epic, similar applies to all, even though adjustment for Msd is either with pug in modules on the sgl. channel analog or with dip switches if dual channel.Epic SS865 5th curve.JPG

Yes, go with the set up instructions. While certain engine/pipe combinations might respond differently to curves, that is grossly overrated!
