So it is really more about setting the initial advanced timing, then relying on a somewhat established curve for most of the other settings?

i guess in the digital total loss its all done with dip switch settings. am i right? because with the analog TL that im runnign its just a matter of plugging in different ignition modules. im running a 701 with 200psi.( havent checked it in a season) i have 28 degrees advance with 3 degree timing retard starting at 4500 with a 8000 rev limiter.

Yeah, mine as a series of dip switches on the back of it behind the plate. Does yours have any porting? I might run 28 just to play it safe, though your initial advance seems somewhat conservative?

mild porting. its all the advance i need right now. night and day difference over stock ignition. you might also experience a hard start if you go too advanced.

Can someone break down what 'Total Retard' or 'Final Retard' is referring to? Is it the total number of crank shaft degrees that the advancement is drawn back starting at the begin retard RPM? What does this setting prevent and/or do in the system? Preventing deterioration of rings and such at high RPMs from super high pressures?

I have no reference as to what is a safe setting and why, here.

If you have 30 degrees of advance at ####rpm and want to make it 15 degrees at ####rpm (your rev limiter) you are setting final retard

Yes, it's a slope reduction down to 16 degrees. but way before the rev limit! Please, look up suggested curves or you will grenade it.

The way I am understanding the MSD Total Loss instructions, is that the sloped reduction or "Total Retard" ends at the max rev limit. Is that not correct?

In that picture they have 24 degrees advance from 1500 to 4000 rpms and it starts retard at 4000 from 24 degrees to 18 degrees having a retard of 6 degrees from 4000 rpms to 7500 rpms final retard of 18 degrees

Your max retard is at the rev limit. It comes out at a linear rate between your start retard setting and your rev limit.

A base of 28, beginning retard at 5000, rev limit 9000, and a total retard of 15, would give a linear drop between 5000 and 9000. At 9000, it has pulled it's max retard of 15, so you would have 28 static-max retard 15=13 final degrees@9000. It would pull out 3.75 degrees per 1000 rpms
