"Foam" is a 4 letter word.... :(

How about applying a rubber coat to the inside, like that liquid rubber you apply to tool handles, tip some in and [try] and roll the hull around to coat it all.

ok.... I'm back on this thread now...

I did the glassing last night.... It took 2 solid hrs of laying glass... I really took my time and did it up very strong and thick!!!!

a few things to notice...

  1. the tray was pushed in on the sides in front of the footholds a bit to make it wider.. maybe an inch or so..
  2. the holds are completely reshaped on the rear where your feet slide in.
  3. I opened up behind the foothold to give me more tray area
  4. I removed the top part of the foothold, so my leg won't rub (like 24-7's do)
  5. layed two layers of biaxial weave on the tray
  6. and one -two layers around the holds..
  7. this glass we got was every bit of 3/16" thick... amazing stuff!!!!
  8. foamed w/ 2 part Hi Bond 2lb foam
  9. no rear exhaust, single front only for less chance of leaking into tray
  10. 5200 all thru hull fittings (both sides)
that's about it, I think..

first pic: I got 16" of room behind my holds now and 21" total from foothold to foothold on the inside furthest point. that is a huge increase.
Not to mention the hold goes forward for maore than half the tray.

second pic: different angle

How much buoyancy do you think you've lost from widening the tray?

Actually, probably none since you removed the rear exhaust, nevermind me, carry on.

fyi - my footholds are are about .25" -.5" from the outer skin on the inside... so much room, but a lot less foam. It will still float

I recently put WDK REV's on my Roundnose. They take up a similiar amount of room in the tray, from the looks of it.
I think my reinforcing is similar to yours, and I can verify: It still floats, very well.

(And I do still have rear exhaust)

i like how you did all of the work,

what did you use to shape the foam? sandpaper?

i love sanding that stuff,

great ideas

yeah... I just held the footholds in w/ screws till it was foamed, cut it w/ a saws-all, then shaped w/ a high speed grinder... after that I was ready to glass it in then a light sanding to remove nibs and make it smooth for turf

Whats the best way, to prevent the foam from being waterlogged? I just got a slightly used 99 SJ, in great shape, but I want to make it a flatwater freestyle boat. I do not want to have to deal with water logged foam! Sounds like alot of work to fix!! I dont have footholds yet..
