Forget the upgrade, how bout this?

He must be thinking x-scream... If he doesn't even know how to pronounce the type of engine he thinks he needs, he has absolutely no business buying anything more than the 440 he currently owns.

In my opinion, stick with the 440, hope something breaks (which probably won't take long with a 440), so you're able to learn a little something and don't even think about an aftermarket ski until you're at least able to stand up without falling on the 440. For god sakes, man.
ugh, thanks and sorry. yeah, xscream of course is what I meant

ok? with all due respect, to me it's a little creepy you are trying to "figure out who I am"?? and know my birthday but ok

The ONLY benefit I see to doing it from your 401k is that the interest you're paying GOES BACK TO YOU. You aren't paying interest to a financial institution. I still wouldn't do it to fund a hobby, but we're different people. At least if you're doing it this way, you'll see the benefits.
actually a good point. a loan is probably a better idea than a withdrawal

first constructive thing in this thread so far.
ironically, the person on the other end of the line from merrill lynch in so many words also said i was an idiot for taking a withdrawal, but he did it less direct of course. i think he felt a victory for at least convincing me to consider a loan, though i am pretty sure he still thought i was an idiot haha

Buy a modified square for $2500 or a modified round for $4500.

Even by the logic of you're only young once, it seems pretty silly to pay more in penalties / interest than it costs to buy a good solid upgrade ski. A limited SJ is a HUGE upgrade over any 440. It's not like he's Mark Gomez throwing down backies on his 440/550 with enough talent to eventually pull a sponsorship from RRP. But even if he were, Gomez rode on a superjet for a while before Trinity and RRP started to notice. A lot can be done on a stock SJ hull with just bolt ons, even on flatwater.

Go big or go home is talking about your balls, not your wallet.

Personally its your money. Go for what u want. Might not be the best decision. But its just money. We all have debt when we die. You live once. Do what u want and have fun

Just because you can figure out a way a pay for something doesn't mean you can afford it. Of course what young kid wants to hear that? Too often impulse buys are a later source of great regret. When it comes to toys, the smart move is if you cannot pay cash then you cannot afford it. Like every one has already said, go with a Super jet and ride it for a year before making any rash decisions. BTW the ski in the Craigslist add you posted may be really nice but it's not a very good deal. For about the same price ($14,500) you can build the exact same ski, brand new, Instead of getting some ones used ski.
