Other Freeride and Flatwater Motor Options?

Looking for some insight on an all around big CC motor.

I was wondering who on the forms might have some insight based on your experience with any of these motors. At the end of last year I built a new XFR-LT designed to be an all around ski that fits my style. I dropped in the motor I had to take on a surf trip, but now want to put in a new big motor. I’ve seen videos of guys (particularly Gomez) flat water flipping (fairly big) an XFR glass hull with 900-1000 ccs and stock electronics. While I dont have his talent, that's what I want while maintaining an all around ski.

I want:
  • “Linear” power
  • In order or ridding preference: boat chaser/wake flipper, all around leg dragging lake riding, surf machine, flat water flipper.
  • To sacrifice power for reliability. I know it will break, but I don't want to have to spend multiple thousands each year to keep it running.
I don't want:
  • arm stretching feeling. Insane power.
  • to compete, do crazy combos, or 5 flips in a row.
  • run Total Loss. It's not a cost savings issue but reliability issue. I've ran TL in fresh and saltwater for years successfully. However, I'd rather make up the TL factor with more CC's/displacement.

Motor options I have on hand:
  • Jetworks 840 - Stock Stroke Super Bore
    • Current motor, runs good. 3 seasons old may need a maintenance rebuild or checkup. I can't flatflip with this.
  • DASA 1100 - 0 hours - Jetworks built
    • 20 hours on original build - Rebuilt new crank after sitting.
  • PHP 1015 - 5 hours on original build
    • Owner never got it to run right and bought a new ski. I took the motor in a trade.
  • Jetworks 900 - Super Bore on 4mm crank
    • Send my 840 out for rebuild and add 4mm crank
  • Sell any or all and buy something else is an option too, I’ll consider anything.

Other parts I have and prefer to run:
  • 3.3 gallon tank
  • lithium battery
  • 155 mag pump
  • thrust trim (going to switch to Rickter with flo guard)
  • FS 48s boyseen manifold
  • RRP Carbon lay down pipe / RRP waterbox
  • MSD enhancer with stock box

I think you’d be extremely happy with that dasa 1100.

You’re reminding me of myself. I had a 14 ninja and wanted the same thing you are after. An “all around” boat. I had and ET1100, 49s, 155 mag, pfp, on a charging ignition and pump gas. I felt comfortable in waves and could come in to do combos.

on a side note, why are you asking us if you’ve got a pile of engines on the shelf?

I agree on the DASA, I like the Linear power. I have a small 6mm 820 Non PV. But I dont have any plans to Flat water flip. I dont want a motor that is going to rip out of my hands doing rolls. (Keep in mind, I do more old school tricks) Friend has a 1200 in his Freak and then in DVX. Power was really smooth.

The DASA or PHP in that group. You can't go wrong with either. But my overall choice would be a TPE 964. Smooth linear endless power. And everything else Wetbuffalo said!

My vote would be for a TPE 964. I have been extremely happy with mine. Have put over 300+ gallons though it in two summers of riding. Tuning for them is well established on FS carbs. For me this motor just keeps pulling. I have rode DASA 971s that are grunty down low but fall off compared to how my TPE. I can flat water flip it in a 115 lb surf hull and still go out and ride Erie surf but not feel like I have light switch power. When I pull the trigger this motor is very predictable and Linear

Thanks everyone for your input so far. Its funny years ago I would have given my left nut to have any one of these motors. Now through luck, friends, deals, and timing I have too many. The plan is to commit to one this summer and sell the rest to help complete a bathroom in my house. I've been living single and with two full bathrooms gutted to the studs for four years :-(

I'm a believer in a complete packages. I'm wondering if I should or can reach out to TC Freeride since he builds DASAs and try to have him wrap all the right pieces around my DASA 1100 and set it up for what I want.

I could sell anyone of these and pay for a TPE 964. That was on my list too. I do like the stock stroke rebuild prices...

Thats a good report and the type of ski I'm looking for. Thank you.

You should consider reaching out to @Philip Clemmons to set up the package surrounding your motor. I know he has a lot of experience with the Dasa 1100 and his builds speak for themselves.

Thanks for the tip. A few of the guys I ride with have been working with him the last few years. Everyone of them is a happy camper!

For me tho, I enjoy building and tuning as much as riding. I like figuring out why it doesn't work and how to make it work better. That's part of the hobby for me and I don't want to pay someone else for and lose the fun. I just need some direction and tips along the way.

Maybe I'll reach out and see if he can get me in the right direction.
