ok, I want to buy a stand up and its obvious after reading several posts the the SJ is the best choice. Does anyone freestyle sxrs? They can be bought much cheaper the sj. Why is it everyone likes the SJ? Also how hard is it to put foot holds in?? I"m assuming these are a must to do most tricks? I get scared at the thought of buying a boat then having to cut it up and not get it all sealed up right after trying to do the footholds...

What else typically is used for a freestyle boat?

Most guys go with the SJ because they are light and have great bottom end. They have a larger pump stock. I've built a freestyle SXR and it rips hard. My recommendation would be to buy either boat used and hopefully it would have some parts. You'll save thousands!!! I have a lot of money in my SXR, probably 15k not including the 5999.00 I paid for it. I like the SXR because of the wide tray. I've got my SXR pretty light and powerful but it took a lot of time and elbow grease. basic parts below for freestyle.

Factory "B" wet pipe exhaust
prop
bump compression
freestyle porting
reeds
footholds
handholds
pole

I know that SXR's are cheaper but if you are starting out and want to do freestyle then you have already made your own decision. If you got to ride both the SXR and the SJ then you would know why SJ's are so hard to find and when you do find one they are so much more than the Kawasakis.

While your looking for you a SJ look for one with freestyle mods they are costly and take some labor to install them. If you buy one built it might cost a little more up front but you get tons of labor since someone else done it and the parts are almost free when included with a ski. Read Fly's post bout ski prices Ski prices

And... fillout your location and add youself to the users map so that others know where you are located. In case may need help sometime someone might be close enough to help you

About footholds after you bite the bullet and cut a ski open then it is super easy. There are enough foothold writeups that anyone can install footholds with no worries. And remember it doesn't matter what it looks like under the turf. That is what I done on my first install the underside looked as smooth and clean as the outside of the ski. I fiberglassed, bondoed, painted, and smoothed it all out just to cover it with turf.. lol

Yes the SXR are cheaper for the boat its self than a Super Jet, but the cost of Aftermarket Parts are much higher than a Superjet.
Example: (Pricing from Blowsion's Website)
Advent Programmable Igntition - Kawasaki $505
Factory Pipe 800 SXR Wet Pipe $780.00
JSU 800SXR Billet Cylinder Head $451.38

MSD Ignition Enhancer- Yamaha $274.30
Factory Pipe - B Pipe $690.00
Cylinder Head For 760 or 701 Engines $379.95

Almost a $400 difference in just these parts. Plus with SJ used parts are more plentiful.

Well, an SXR Advent ignition has 4 curves to choose from instead of having only 1 like the MSD superjet enhancer, so "technically" the SXR Advent setup is a better deal.

Also, RD Heads for an SXR Can be bought for $242 (with an optional girdle kit for I believe around $80?) which is cheaper than the JSU sxr head, an also the yamaha head. I believe the RD head for an SXR is the cheapest one out there, and is a great head.

The pipes are the only two things compared that are really accurate, since the SXR only has one wet pipe offered by the aftermarket. Im not sure if there are more wet pipe options for superjets, but the B pipe is the way to go.

The surplus and variety of superjet parts for freestyle is quite larger, and the superjet is alot more nimble for freestyle as you can tell. The SXR has great potential, but can cost a bit more because of the lack of options for freestyle parts. And Superjets can be found used, with tons of mods, for a great overall price, which is another main reason they are so popular for freestyle.

By the way, I have both an sxr and a superjet. They are both fun. But if I could only have ONE ski and HAD to freestyle, I'd take the sxr and put a ton of money into that, instead of spreading out a ton of money into 3 different skis. 2 sxrs and one Superjet that I have.

You really cant go wrong either way you look at it.

I check all the boards everyday, this one, pwctoday, greenhulk, and ebay, looking for a good used ski... I do prefer to buy new simply because I know the history, and I take great care of my skis, so I know they will last, and what its been through. SO far my searches haven't turned up much yet.. Which is why I'm thinking aobbubt just buying a new sj.. but I also am trying to figure out how to rig something up to trailer all 3 of my skis. NEW the sxrs are alot cheaper. But I only get to ride flat water and would definatly want to do freestyle.. have since I used to watch it on espn back in the day!!

For the price of a new SJ you could buy one that has just about everything on it.
Don't sweat the new thing. Once you start doing tricks that new SJ wont look very new.

if your gonna buy new, buy an sxr, a superjet is a rip off brand new if you plan on modifying it. In fct its a rip off anyway since it hasnt changed except for looks in 11 years.

There is a freestyle superjet on ebay with a startign bid of $5000. Lots of good parts in that ski it just needs matching paint. IF you are going to buy new to build a freestyle ski then money is no option. Just go with Wamiltons or Blowsions new freestyle skis. Heck the ultimate freestyle ski is on ebay right now. The Watercraft Factory boat. You will have that much invested in buying/building a new freestyle ski. Plus with a used one the first time you nosestab it in the bottom of the lake you won't feel so bad about the scratches if it is used.

Heck if you want a newer pretty well mint freestyle ski then look at Fly's or there is another 2003 freestyle SJ on the boards that looks mint.

thanks for all the advice guys! I will keep lookin for a used ski. IF I buy new, I would do b pipe and foot holds for starters. I dont see any back flips being on a lake... but the barrel roll is definatly something I want to do!!

TO bad the sxr isn't smaller and lighter, cause from what you get it sure seems like a hell of a deal brand new.

IceRocket,

You are missing the point I was driving at. SXR simple cost more to Mod.
I owned a very nice 04' limited SX-R that I purchased new. I had to purchase new aftermarket part because there were no used parts available for a ski that was introduced in 03'. The money I spent for parts I for my SXR I could have equipped two superjet, quite easily.

Yes it was my choice to buy TBM stuff, I could have purchase cheaper products but sometimes you get what you pay for too. All was trying to say is Your $$$ can go alot farther for a SJ

If there were no aftermarket parts so the yamaha couldn't be hopped up. When Kawasaki introduced the SXR the bottom would have fallen out fo the yamaha standup market. Kawasaki introduced the NEW SXR with a more powerful motor and a cheaper price. They know how to sell skis.

But I will still never own one...LOL
