I just picked up a 94 FX-1 and plan on keeping it for a long time. It will be perfect for my daughter too.
A very cool baby Suyperjet, I love it, and best of all its a Yamaha! Getting ready to paint mine. I cant stand that gay purple.
I'm gonna go with that new bright metallic chevy orange and vinyl dye all the purple bumpers, etc. black w/black turf. Also the bottom will be black too.
I may go with a nice bright red/black too, I have decided yet.

Bscott1218, that thing is beautiful!

I just bought a 95' today and am about to do the same except painting. That purple was a bad choice...

I have one 94

Mine is a 94 fresh from surgery... feetholds, 140 mm pump, "Tubbie" style front sponsons. hope to ride holiday weekend. I will have to paint later, too much screwing off last off season.:bad:

I'm new here, and just bought my FX1 a little over a week ago. I had a pumped up RN before it, and a whole bunch of 440s. I found I really enjoy riding those old skis, and when I first rode an FX1, I absolutely loved it. I can't believe they don't make something like it anymore. Anyhow, I got a really cherry one, and I have some plans for it. I too, would like to get ride of the purple, and redo the gelcoat underneath in white. Anyone done this before?

Welcome to the X Honky! lol

I would just sand and paint over the gelcoat. Its a lot of work to re-gel coat a bottom, especially if you want to remove most of the old gel coat.
On my FX-1 I just fixed my chips and gouges with white gel coat, then sanded it and painted it with a single stage polyurethane Enamel auto paint.

i recently bought my fx-1 from yamanube - I love it!!

Thanks dude!

I know it's a lot of work removing gelcoat. I just HATE the way something looks when it chips, and the old color shows through. It looks so cheap to me. I don't want to ruin my skis resale value although I don't really plan on selling it. The thing is, I'm worried about the paint peeling where the ski rides the trailer, the inside of my suv, the beach stand, or the logs and obstacles I bunny hop but occasionally come up short on. It just seams like gel coat is the right way to do a color change underneath.

If I so sand through all the old stuff down to SMC and re coat, is there ever any known problems with adhering?

Add me to the list. I have an FX1, Sj, and SXR.

My FX1 has been a 3 year build, starting from a 62T ski bought from Mile9c1 on the board 4-5 years ago. While in the process of this build, my FX1 has seen 3 different houses and 2 different states, most recently moving from Michigan to California a year ago, and I'm finally getting around to finishing it.

Cool thing for me is that I have done 100% of the work other than the pump conversion. This would not have been possible without this forum and tons of patience from my wife.

Buildsheet:
Hull
Carbon reinforced hull (2 layers of 5.5oz on sides, btm, front, pole bracket area)
Carbon wrapped pole -2"
Umi standard turnplate/sealed bearing
Blowsion lowered pole bracket (re-anodized black)
Dawson Dig'r footholds
New foam
exhaust/steering re-sealed
Tubbies glassed in
Hood glassed in
Gunwales glassed in
Internal fuel fill
Dual cooling
JD intake
JD ride plate
144mm shoe
Wetracer front latch
WD rear latch
hood straps
limiting rope
UMI zero's w/crossbar
ODI grips
X-metal Throttle
Kenny Keepers
stainless battery tray
a couple bilges - TBD

Driveline/misc
144mm Blowsion pump, blueprinted and polished (why I don't know, I was bored) with Protec Maxflow 82mm compression nozzle
Sato adj. steering nozzle (but considering using the Protec that came with the pump)
-2mm cutback 13/18 swirl
Wolf cone
epoxied and ported 62T cases (done by yours truly thanks to all the info on the X! )
Ported 61X cyl 81.5mm bore- sportport template and much X info, especially from Matt_E
Weisco pistons
Moto T reeds
Riva spacer
Dual 44's (planning reverse jetting)
Blowsion head, 35cc's
B-pipe, Jethot coated manifold/head/stinger
B-pipe mods aka TS style
Dual digital TL
Oddessey battery
JSS wires

+ many other minor parts

I just finished painting it with some HOK hues, but unfortunately it isn't sitting well with me. Color wasn't what I expected, and the design looks better in pics than in person. So I plan to re-do it over the next couple weeks with Titanium Pearl, Tangelo Pearl, and flat black.

Oh yeah, this build almost killed me. When grinding a crappy casted JD grate on my 6" bench grinder, half of the stone broke off (1 lb) and hit me in the face. Luckily a broken orbital, nose and some stitches were all that happened. Had it hit me in the forehead or side of the head, I might not have been able to write this.
