Yea it can get sketchy especially here where there’s rocks also..Tide was low and there was a drop off where it went from like 6” to 3ft deep. Sucked out when I was coming in and it was like hitting a curb going 45mph. If it wasn’t for the footstraps I woulda gone over the bars. Of course my son comes in right behind me fully pinned and timed it perfectly and went 30ft up the beach and stopped right next to the tote. At least the waves were good

Did the same thing at the spot we talked about near UCSB back in the day.... Bunch of college girls on the beach so I thought I would be cool and slide up on the beach on my 650SX only to have it stick after about 20' and me go over the bars in front of everyone. Good times.

Inside layed up with a layer of 1708 going one way and 1208 another after filling the cracks with milled fibers. Had to grind allot off the bottom. Unfortunately it’s not just a crack. It’s splintered in every direction. Going to do two layers of 1708 on the bottom. Want to ride this weekend next time I have to pull the engIne I’ll do the entire bottom.

Try this at the paint store or if your having a shop spray it, they should get close. This fx1 was redone a few years back.

Got the bottom done..filled the cracks then a layer of 1708, 1208 and 9oz on the top..will sand/shape it when I get home and reassemble tomorrow then back on the water Saturday. Going to glass the inside of the hood and tray on the fx this weekend. Then I just have to make the nose piece and do some body work

Got my ski back on the water in time to score some fun waves this morning. Not perfect..over sanded a little but plenty strong.
Back to the fx..gotta get it done ASAP I don’t know how he rides that 550 as well as he does. Takes me about 50’ to get that thing turned around..

Glassed the inside of hood. To stiffen it up a little, repair a crack and cover the air intakes on top..
Glassed the tray. Hoping one layer of 1708 is enough. I’m getting low on materials and don’t want to buy more.. Without solid foam it’s definitely not as sturdy. Just have to cover where the footholds were and make a nose piece. Will prob wrap the pole again with 9oz had to taper the 1208 and it’s kind of thin. The base is cracked otherwise I don’t think he would break it till he’s bigger. Will get him an rrp by then..

Nose piece rough cut. Still need to shape it. Not perfect threw one away better than this when I built mine but not going to redo it. Strong just a couple wrinkles in carbon.

Glassed one side of tray and did a bunch of sanding. Getting close

Lots of hand sanding/removing resin drips the last few days....slow going...going to lay up the bottom nose piece this afternoon...been too cold in the mornings this week..

Reading some old threads and am suddenly having regret I didnt do the 650 pump swap..dont have the $ right now and I already have a fresh midshaft/impeller ready to go...thinking Ill build it as is and when I have some extra $ ill do the pump swap and put a pipe on it...if FP ever does another run...

Theres never a better time to do that swap then when it's all raw and apart ;)
Only speaking from experience as It's more work to completely disassemble and repaint etc etc after it's all complete.
Im sure members here could hook you up with some trades to get what ya want. My old neighbor always said, do it the way you want, the first time.
Just his 2 cents. Love the build and stay motivated. even sanding is progress. :D

Thanks..I know..I keep justifying it by thinking it will be fine for a 65lb rider with stock motor but I'm sure I will regret it...if I hadn't just glassed in the inserts I would change it...we will see I guess

The conversion can be next winters build for you.
Yea after filling pinholes/gouges and sanding for the 3rd day in a row yesterday (and still looking like crap) I decided I’m just going to give it the old appliance epoxy job and not even do the bottom. Just going to do the sides, intake and pump tunnel and the top deck..there’s ALLOT of gouges on the bottom that need to be fixed if it’s getting a real paint job..and the pump tunnel and where the rails meet the bottom deck are a real mess..Aside from the small pump I’m also having reservations about the wide rails..I’ve always been anti “training wheels” and I want to make sure I’m not going to want to cut them off which would be a bummer after I spent all that time painting it for real..

I’m putting a used topend in it I’ve had laying around for the last 15years against my better judgment also so maybe next year when he’s a little bigger I’ll do the pump, put a 61x cyl on it and a pipe. Then I can make a decision about the rails..maybe I’ll throw some mods on the 550 in the meantime so It’s more rideable so he has something to ride when I’m working on it again

Your son is 65 lbs? The stock pump is gonna be plenty for him until he's twice that weight. I wouldn't sweat it for a few years minimum. Christ, I'm 185, and still have plenty of fun on a bone stock FX1 and it has plenty of power as-is. I am not riding surf, but still........

Yea he just turned 9. I’m just worried about whitewater hook up and having enough thrust to unweight the ski when you are hung up in the lip on a steep wave and need to air drop so you don’t pearl. He’s not there skill wise yet but with how fast he’s progressing he will be soon..I’ve taken him out on some big days and one place the 550 lacks aside from steering is that instant thrust for him to get over big whitewater. Don’t want to be back in the same boat.. Also since he’s so lite I’d imagine it’s harder for him to get the nose up going over a big wall of whitewater. On the 550 he has to carry allot of speed where I can just go sideways and pull up and turn as I’m going over and it makes it allot easier.

What mods does the 550 have?
