Gas prices too high? Read this...

Some states allow you to get a refund of taxes for gas that is purchased for things not being driven on the streets and highways (many state taxes are basically for road use, and if it's not on the road...).

So those of you with skis (I'd assume everyone here), boats, motocross bikes, lawn mowers, etc., you should check with your state to see if you get money back.

Here is chart (from 2001) that goes through the states and their restrictions:

http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/ohim/hwytaxes/2001/pt5.htm

Examples, if you live in:

Arizona or California, you get $.18 back per gallon

Connecticut, you get $.36 back per gallon

However, if you live in:

Pennsylvania or South Carolina, you get nothing back

Those of you from the great state of Texas get $.20 back per gallon, and the form you need to collect it can be found here:

http://www.window.state.tx.us/taxinfo/taxforms/06-106.pdf

So, if you've been moaning and groaning about the price of gas, enjoy. And if you don't take advantage of it, don't complain, lol.

Moderaters, I will be posting this in two sections so that readers have a better chance of seeing it and taking advantage. A sticky might be warranted, IMHO.

Use in boats is not refunded, except when operatedin waters located
on private property owned or controlled by the user. Use by certain
foreign consulate officers or employees is exempt when purchased with
a credit card approved by the State Department. Use by off-highway
recreational vehicles is taxed.

true and i never thought that "why should i pay tax that goes to roads for something that doesnt go on roads. guess the tax pays for other stuff.

I dont quite understand what Im looking at here on that site. :261: Maybe Im looking to hard and hoping for the best..... Can some one please explain this to me. How do you know if your able to get refund for boat/ski gas? :dunno: I believe my state is at 17 that would be a nice chunk of change after full summer of riding. If I can get it that is.

dude we get 17 cents for every gallon of gas we buy this year

Missouri

Missouri will refund the entire 17¢/gallon fuel tax if you follow the correct procedures. First, file the Motor Fuel Refund Application Form 4924 with the Missouri Department of Revenue. This application needs to be updated every two years, and must be on file before a claim will be honored.

To apply for a refund, send in completed form 4923 (“Motor Fuel Refund Claim”), and 4925 (“Schedule A-Marine Fuel Purchases by County”) along with all the original invoices or sales slips. You must apply within one year from the date of purchase, or April 15th following the year of purchase, whichever is later.

You can get the required forms through any of these methods:

* Download from http://www.dor.mo.gov/tax/business/fuel/forms/.
* Request via fax from Michigan’s “Forms by Fax” service by calling (573) 751-4800.
* Call the DOR at (573) 751-7671.

What you look at first (once you jump to your state) is the General Non Highway column. If it says REF, you get all of the tax (in the tax rate column) refunded to you. If it says REF followed by a number in paranthesis, you get that number refunded.

Example: Mississippi taxes 18.4 cents per gallon, and they refund you, REF 11.6, 11.6 cents per gallon.

You also need to check OTHER/REMARKS column to make sure their are no restrictions on boats.

I made a mistake when I pointed out California in my original post and forgot to check that. If you look at that column you'll see it says, "Use in boats is not refunded, except when operated in waters located on private property owned or controlled by the user." So if you buy gas for your boat or pwc and use it on a private lake, you'll get back 18 cents per gallon, but if you use them on public waterways, you don't get jack back.

Oh hope this helps.

So if i read that correctly i should be able to get $0.264 back on every gallon in wisconsin? It says ref or ex, guess i will have to look into this more.

Sorry, you're screwed.

Wisconsin law provides that motor vehicle fuel is not subject to the Wisconsin motor vehicle fuel tax when it is used for off-road purposes in mobile machinery and equipment. Exceptions: It is subject to the motor vehicle fuel tax when placed into licensed motor vehicles used for off-road purposes, snowmobiles, recreational motorboats, and all-terrain vehicles (unless the ATV is registered for private use).

What sucks? You expected a credit on fuel consumption?

Interesting law, but I bet the filing process will take longer than the ski season to process. At least some people will get a few bucks back.

do i save my reciepts or something...?

This concept is basically going through one ear and out the other. Its like im sitting in english class :p

Yes, save all your reciepts, and write on the back of them, for your benifit ,what it went for. You will then use these to fill out all the necessary B.S. paperwork/ forms. Plus if you ever get audited for any reason you will need to prove where this money/gas went.
