after reading and reading i decided not to buy the msd coil like i was going to for my superjet.
I like the JSS rebuild but I wonder can and will the original coil go bad? heck, it 16 yrs old.
So I figured maybe ill go with this one on ebay but i am not to thrilled that the seller does not state the manufacture.

f i go with the direct yamaha part i will need to buy the boots too id guess.

some people i here buy the sxr800 coil and use it.

so what would you seasoned guys recommend?
thanks!

The coils dont go bad. Well they can but its very rare.
JSS is the way to go. He has done tons of them for us and we have never had a problem. The upgraded wire and end sparks so much harder.

even brand new kawi or yami wire is junk. It turns to dust from the vibration of the motor. JSS uses a much stronger and longer lasting wire.

That sounds good. Id hate to buy a new coil/wires just to have them go brittle and have to buy again in a few years.
So JSS it sounds like the way to go. Plus it a bit less $$ (it all helps ;-)

Jss coils have never worked for me. Salt water kills them for some odd reason

From JSS Site
"The neoprene shell resists gas, oil, and saltwater environments."
....
" water can never work its way up inside the wire"

That VA Sea Water must be CRAZY!! ;-)

or you can go to NAPA and buy the 7mm or 8mm Beldin plug wire just like what JSS uses and do the work yourself. It takes about 30 minutes to do it yourself.

I don't post much but I feel this strongly. Go the JSS route. I have to coils done by him and never had a problem. Fresh and Salt water. His work is top notch. I haven't had to cut back a plug wire in years.

John at JSS has done over 30 Sj/kawi style coils for us with no problems.

Now weeks have a few 650 CDI coils go bad but he just swapped the wires to other coils.

Mine lasted less than a season. About a month after install my ski was breaking up all over the place. I chased my tail and it lead me to the coil. I had to close the gap on the plugs for it to keep up with my engine. The coil failed completely after less than one full season.
So then if you sent a 2nd coil and that one back to JSS he could swap the wires.

John is a great guy and will always work with you. But you just need to work with him. The problem with Elc stuff is everyone blames it without looking at the whole setup. I can't tell you how many time people have told me a cdi was bad and it ended up being a ground wire or clogged carbs.

The coil is weak. I shouldn't need to send something back after several rides. I also shouldn't need to cut the wires back or replace them after less than a season of riding. I'm glad you have had great experiences, but isn't my first rodeo. It was the coil. I am not bashing them, simply stating my experience.

If you run a JSS coil I suggest a gap of .024 or less. My buddy recently swapped his stock coil for a JSS because he had old wires and we found the same issue I previously had. Ski would break up until we closed the gap. Something he never did with stock. Draw your own conclusions from that.
