Got Spark, got fuel, got compression, no start?

hello all, been helping a buddy with an X2 (87 i believe). Here is what has us stumped, it's getting fuel, brand new carb, plugs are wet, it's got great compression an even 145psi both cylinders, and it's got spark! but i won't run? or even fire! the spark looks weak, but it's there. did the resistense test on the coil and it's within spec. also we have a 91 X2 parts boat and have swapped out all parts and still no go. if the stator was going would it still have spark? thats the only thing we didn't swap. What are the odds of two CDI's being bad? thanks for all your thoughts guys!-Josh

they are 650, the one that was in it is a "bad attitude" from some place in TX, and the stocker is outa the 91.

Kinda ruled out the gas because it was just mixed saturday and we ran it all day sat in the ski's no problem.

as for timing would it at least backfire and detinate if i squirt alittle starting fluid down the plug hole? it don't! nothing at all....

we are going to tear into it again this week....i really didn't want to pull the stator cover if i didn't have to, but i am out of options.....

I ran into something similar last year. It turned out to be a weak battery. It turned over OK, and with the plugs out it turned over fast enough to produce a spark. But with the plugs installed it turned over a little bit slower and would not produce a spark.

a weak coil can also do this. Try closing the gap on the plugs a bit, and if it works, you have an issue

Bad reeds maybe? I'm new to the jet ski thing...haven't ever laid hands on a motor, but I've seen it happen on a Banshee.

try br7 instead of 8's they are a little hotter. or b7es if you still have the resistor ends on the plug wires.

Since its an X-2 I have good tip. Mark your plug wires after trying this idea. Try switching the plug wires and see if it will start. This problem has happened to me before on my 88 X-2. The wires are the same length so its easy to mess things up.

i tryed 7s in mine and nearly blew it up, but that was out of the water and maybe a fluke. but still i dont wouldent wanna try it again

It runs on either cylinder on either plug.. PS the wires arnt generally the same length.


I like the chance of a deadish battery. if its sparking i doubt it will be the stator, if its not charging its possible, if its dies when its start to get hot its possible, if it wont spark at all its possible... but if its sparking id sudgest its just not quite strong enough.

U should be able to check the stator without pulling it. I think that's the only way to really test it.

Just look for an AC voltage across the 2 wires.

Use an analog meter for this. I've never had much luck reading that type of thing with a digital.

Post your readings. It should be 100+, I think.

EDIT: I have had a weak spark cause the problem you described, on a bike.

This won't make a difference for starting. The 7 plug has a longer insulator length which causes it to run hotter during combustion.

Both plugs fire at the same time on the X2. It doesn't matter if you mix them up.


Check to see if your flywheel has spun. This will keep it from starting.

ok i will....i havn't had much wrench time....been out riding every day....i am going to swap out a friends cdi/coil first then i will pull the cover and check the flywheel. i'll post back with results tomorrow....thanks every one!
