testing out some vid from my new HD cam. Is there a trick to posting this stuff on youtube...because it looks like crappola on there and won't let me go above 360....hmmm

When I work with HD video I get files from the cam that have an .m2ts extension. I edit them with project settings matching the format of the .m2ts (in my case 1440X1080i) then output to .m2ts which I upload to Youtube. The results as you have seen are nice.

The title in your video says you output as 1280X720 and .mp4 Any conversion will degrade quality. Add that to Youtube's conversion and ick!

I think you use Pinnacle so I can't give you info on how to do m2ts. Is your version of Pinnacle fairly recent? On output you should have choices like MP2, AVI, WMV. .m2ts output is under AVC format in my Sony Vegas editing software.

Yes, I am runningi it through pinnacle with a setting of 1440x1080i.....but when I create the file, it is an mp4, which looks really good, (to me). I think it lost something in the upload to youtube and is a little choppy.

1080i? Does your camera have a progressive mode?

If you export out at ProRes codec it should be smaller and YouTube compression friendly. I'd highly recommend using Vimeo as well. Much less compression...

What version of Pinnacle are you using? Include things in the name like plus or HD or studio or whatever.

Are the files you are getting from the camera .m2ts files?

Another test to try is shooting a short video and uploading it directly without editing to see if you get the 1080 option on Youtube and a better look. You can always delete it later. .m2ts files are big and uploading them takes a while. That is the price of quality. If you are uploading 1280X720 it makes sense it doesn't do 1080.

I think I am actually going to cut back on the quality of the original recordings. It is almost impossible to edit...my computer crashes all over the place and I don't really want to throw the cash into updating it .........yet. I still have an ol tube TV...so I can only watch them in HD on my computer. Yes, I'll try uploading a small vid directly and see what comes up. I just hate watching vid that is unedited.....

I'll check the codec coming from the cam. Either way, I am already happy...the vids look 1000x better than what I had before.

Glad hear things went well on the ride since it was a maiden voyage for the winter build. I was more conservative riding today so I won't hurt so bad tomorrow. More finesse and less smashing.

You might want to check out the video editor on Youtube as an interim solution. Login, upload your clips then go to My Videos and click editor on the top. Not a lot of features but it doesn't crash. You can make titles in Pinnacle and upload them as a clip. I used Youtube editor before I got my i3 desktop.

Well for what its worth, I think that quality was pretty good. I'd be stoked if I could get that quality with my crappy pre HD Go Pro.

Quality looked good to me. I like vimeo a lot better too. It just works unlike youtube. Youtube for some reason messes up a lot with some of my vids. Not sure how others do, that's just my experience.

I'll keep my really good vids in SuperHD on external harddrives....and re-edit them to blue ray in about 5 years....

Going to update my computer from XP to Windows XP64 so I can double my memory from 3.2Gigs to 8Gigs. That should help with the editing.

As long as you are capturing and saving in HD that is a good thing. XP 64 may support more RAM but it was a strange beast. I hate to plug Micro$oft but Win7 is pretty good. Your video says you are using Pinnacle 12. Did you do the 12.1 update that helps HD support?:

They are up to version 15 which probably would help with HD a lot. 12 came out in 2008 which was early in the HD editing history. The 12.1 update is like hammering HD support on the side.

Lots of RAM is nice for disk caching which video editing likes. I render a movie out of Vegas then go to create a DVD. I've seen short DVDs created (DVD files saved to disk) in like 4 seconds.

In regards to waiting for Blu-Ray:
I started burning data DVDs with .m2ts files as the data. Win7 home premium 64 bit can play those. Hooking up a recent laptop using HDMI to a big TV looks very awesome.

Barry, your wayyyy ahead of me! haha! I don't have a laptop, or a HDTV, or a blue ray player.....Pinnacle runs great on XP64 from what I've read and thats the only program that I run, besides office and cruisin the internet....so I should be fine with that. If not, Windows 7 is where I am goin.

btw....I have Pinnacle 12 Ultimate with all the newest updates. My computer is just too slow right now for HD. I have 2TB internal drives for storage,a dual core chip, and a kick as$ pinnacle video card....just need some memory! I thought my computer was fast...it renders regular footage in double time....and the HD in real time, but the editing chunks and I need that to be fast so it can keep up with my brain...

You really should try out editing on Youtube as a temporary workaround. It sucks that you have to wait for all your clips to upload and process but it does work pretty good.

Did I sayI had any of those toys? I said it looks great that way. :smile: If you know someone that has the toys it's a great way to share every pixel. I'm waiting for LED/LCD @ 120hz prices to drop a little more before investing.

I thought Madmat built you the bad boy editing rig not that long ago. The type of hard drive makes a big difference. The hard drives with SATA3 and 32meg of cache rock. A 1TB drive is under $70. Don't get me started on SSD. Decent sizes are a bit expensive still. As I said before RAM is a biggie. The video card doesn't make a lot of difference for video editing which is simple 2D. They are just good for gaming.

In regards to Pinnacle the new versions have HD in the name. That says a lot. HD from the ground up. Input .m2ts and output .m2ts for very sharp looking results. My core i3 with Win 7 64 and Vegas HD is rock solid. That is something you don't usually think of doing video editing.

Like you I have kept my i3 lean and mean by not installing a bunch of crap. I do almost all my surfing on an old lappy running Linux. It's nice to be much safer. I do have to use the i3 to play Youtube @ >=720p.

I really just need to upgrade from XP and get some RAM! I am able to edit....it just doesn't go super fast any more!

HD is 4 times the raw data of SD. That's a lot of bits to be tossing around. Good luck getting things worked out!
