Other Helmet & Crashing?

I've yet to ride a ski, so people telling me horror stories of hard crashes and what not are starting to get to me. Is it really that bad? and was wondering if I was to wear a helmet, what kind? I heard BMX because Dirt Bike helmets get too heavy wet. Not saying Im going to right away, but its good info to know. Thanks in advance!!

It's not that bad really. You can always buy new teeth when you smash your mouth into the handle pole. The main reason is IF you get knocked out, you'll drown. Can't buy a new life...

I was carving buoys on my WB1, and leaned into the stop switch on a turn. Instant E-brake, over the bars, head first into the side of the ski with my helmet. It rang my bell pretty good, but I'm glad I had the helmet on. I've got tons of stories of skis in the surf, but the little flat water experience was the one that made me wear my helmet religiously.

Can't put a price on safety. I always wear a helmet in the surf, usually wear a helmet on flatwater (expect when I am tuning or something). You may not need a helmet right away but once you start doing stunts or riding hard you should have one.

Downhill Mountain bike helmets are good, Do a search on here and your should find a lot more info!

slightly off topic, but it goes along with helmets..what does everyone use for googles? i have some mx goggles right now and i like them, but was wondering if anyone has used anything else.

how do you keep googles from fogging up? i always have that problem

Something I would have ended up asking, thanks! lol

spend 80 on a helmet or 1200 on crown? I busted out 1/2 a tooth yesterday wasnt wearing my helmet cause I wasnt going to do anything stupid...... at the very least wear a mouth guard.

Last time I didnt wear a helmet I was just cruising around and ended up in the ER with 4 inches of my scalp peeled back from hitting the turn plate with my head. No more.

$50 vs $200 snell approved rating?

you must not worry about protection too much. Might as well not wear one at all.

I'd agree that helmets are key but I dont see it necessary for a $200 snell helmet for our sport. Most (keyword) injuries from our sport are light impacts with the head to the ski in which case a standard Downhill MTB helmet will be just fine.

Im not saying that getting the top of the line is bad, You cant be to safe! but Garretonufer Id disagree with your comment "might as well not wear one at all" cause a standard helmet is better than nothing and could save your life or atleast prevent minor injuries to the head.

I also use a bmx helmet it was like 80 bucks and the ski has hit my head plenty of times when im learning barrel rolls and back flips. For flat water i dont wear one unless someone is going to throw v-wakes.

i only wear one in the ocean or if i decide to push my abilities in flat water. I was given a couple MX helmets and that's what i wear. Yes they're heavy but i prefer the safety factor of the DOT and snell ratings.
