High power boat chaser. Engine options?

I’m looking into getting a larger displacement power valve motor.

I like to chase boats and wakes. But am wanting something more than my ported 760.

What are my options and what should I be keeping an eye out for?

Thanks.

Whats your budget? There's an SS900RR for sale on FB for 3k. A tpe1105 for 5k and a 964 for 4k. New engines are gonna cost you 7-10k
Im a little biased but a php 898 is an amazing option if you can find one. I do know someone who might be willing to let one go with little to no hours since Zack rebuilt it.

My budget depends I am not looking to spend 7-10k. I think a used motor that is in good condition is probably what I should be after.

I saw that ss900rr motor for sale and that’s what actually sparked my renewed interest. I was told that motor is a great motor but not for chasing boats, or my riding style.

Most likely whatever I get will go into an Fx1 or superjet.

Can I use the 964 for chasing boats? I thought that one may be more of a comp motor as well….

Honestly, For Chasing boats, the motor you have is probably best. When you go with the larger displacement motors, the power is much more like a light switch, It is not linear. You would need to have the motor built for your use. I found a DASA Non PV billet 6mm stroker motor 8 years ago which was built for surf riding. Power is really linear.... Great for surf riding, Chasing boats? Not the best, but pipe tuning could calm it down some. But still way more manageable than say a 964!!!!

964 is a great boat chaser and by no means a comp motor. Once you go to big motor skis you will never go back except for dedicated surf ski. My dedicated boat chaser is a tigercraft V3 with an ET 1035. its a riot.

I've seen people do lots with just a simple non ported 61x with the usual bolt ons in a superjet. My old superjet that was rockered and shortened 4 inches would flip off a boat wake no problem with a basic 61x engine, bpipe, enhancer, head and 9/15 hooker..

I think that ss900rr is going to be your best bet. Not sure why someone told you it wouldn’t be. Stock stroke so no wild rod angle and a smaller piston vs a 964. I don’t think you will find a better deal then that ss900rr. I wouldn’t do this if you are going to put it in a superjet and especially an fx1. I think you would be better off getting the 760 ported and doing supporting mods. If anything get an aftermarket hull like a edge or and sv1/Juan or av pro

Everyone's always told me when I've asked similar questions that a superjet pump tunnel cant move enough water to make a big PV motor work right.
Putting one in a FX1 is just a plain bad idea unless that pumps been swapped.

I mean, I'm not going to lie. A light switch sounds kind of amazing.

OK I probably should list what I'm running.

FX1 with tom 21 tunnel 144 pump swap. 144 solas mag, 9/15 hooker
Ported 760 , High comp ADA head (Can't remember dome size off the top of my head) 200 psi, Running 100 octane, zeel with custom curve, dual 46's, Boyesen rad valve intake, Jet maniac SJ waterbox, FX1 b-pipe.

How you set up your pipe, compression, pump, and ignition curve(along with flywheel weight) has a huge impact on whether the throttle response is light switchy. Both 898s I've had have had linear throttle response. That was on pump gas, charging weight flywheel.
However I'm going TL this season and raising compression because I want the light switch...

I was running a lightened flywheel the beginning of last season. However with the a02t zeel and 760 setup it created an issue where my battery wouldn't charge. So I went back to stock. To be honest I feel like I like the stock flywheel better.

I have some ported 61x cylinders I'm going to run on one of my SJ's. I also have a built out 760 I'm currently running. I like the idea of having some monster power though.
