Homemade carbon rideplate

Not really a 'ski buildup' but part of a ski buildup.
I shortened a hull by about 3.5inches and did not want to cut down a nice carbon rideplate, so I made a mold of it and made my own off the mold.
I used PVA mold release from UScomposits. I used epoxy resin because that's what I buy in bulk. But even the cheapo resin from an auto parts store can be used to make parts. Just can't use to adhere anything TO the hull.

It has a 'visual' layer of carbon on the bottom of the plate and a piece of shiny cloth material (like silk) for the top layer. I got it from a fabric store. Cute, huh?
It's ok for my first rideplate attempt, I need to wetsand the mold some as the rideplate I took the mold off of has seen many years of abuse.
Check it out.
Edit, feel free to make fun of it and critize.

Looks good IMO.

I have to ask though... Have you ever ridden a hull that short before? I shortened mine 3 inches and had the rideplate about a half inch longer than the hull. I love/loved it but I'm 165lbs geared up and it was still a little tricky at times. I'm a little worried for you with 3.5 inches and a rideplate that's even shorter.

I have not ridden a short hull before, but most people say they love it and there's no going back. I am about 170lbs with gear and soaking wet.
I really only ride surf and anything to keep the nose up in waves should help.
We'll see, I still have my std length hull if I hate this shortened one.

I have a feeling you'll really like it in the flat water, but want a full length, or close to it, for surf. I cut my hull a little over 3", and had a rideplate about a half inch longer also. It was all I could do to keep the nose down in the surf. Made it very hard to ride, tail standing constantly. I put a stock SN rideplate on, and it made a world of difference. Ski was still very loose and easy to pull the nose up on, but you could also ride around in the footholds and keep the front end down. Might be perfect for you, but it was a little much for me in the surf. I need to do this exact project, and make a full length one, haha.

I agree. I could barely recover from the first landing before the next wave hit me when I went to Daytona. Although if you (WAB) ride the surf in GA, you may like it a lot since the surf in GA isn't much more than a big boat wake on the lake.

honestly, I cant see it being THAT much of an issue......you will adjust to whatever youre riding...

Ive logged some time on a -2" superfreak 55lb carbon hull in the surf and didnt even know it was shortened until I brought it back in....

wabs a surf shredder, he'll kill it so long as that thing gets good electrics in it :poke:

as for the rideplate....its ugly, the carbon weave isnt 100% straight, its on the wrong side and his dog is ugly too!

You guys let me down, I was hoping someone would ask if I borrowed Highroller's grinder to cut it!! .
I'll make another plate that is regular length, just to swap out and see the difference on the shortened hull.

lt does look good, man! Are you sure that is not a Highroller plate.Hell,my ride plate is that short.lt was made of fiberglass and so l covered it in carbon on both sides cause l don't think it will hold up without the reinforcement!

I have no issues at all riding a -2 RN hull in surf. :dunno:

looks good WAB, a little more r&d and who knows, you might end up selling a few....

Matt_E - was it you that only cut the back corners or the hull -2 in and left the pump/plate stock length? i could of sworn someone did this and said they had great overall results.
