How do you choose?

Hey everyone,

I would like to buy a freestyle hull and have no clue how to choose one. I have been going through manufactures and came up with a list of manufactures I found so far and some models.

X Scream DVX
Tigercraft FV-PRO
Krash 50 cal
Rickter
DJR Nitro
SFS (super freak skis) circus
Crazy Joe’s BAM
Hurricane several models
Lee Stone products revolver
Trendsetters phantom and backie chan
Max freestyle hull

The more I look up manufactures the more I get overwhelmed. I ride flat water and would like to try some surf.

How do you choose a hull? I know you can talk to people and maybe ride some but they are not popular in my area so it’s kinda tough.

There is a lot of people in NY. Go ride some stuff. For freestyle it is pretty cut and dry what hulls do the best. You have listed some walmart hulls and top of the line hulls. You're budget may eliminate half this list.

Thanks for the reply. I just don’t know anyone that rides them to see how they are.

You mentioned that it is pretty cut and dry what hulls do best. The more money you spend is a better hull? Is that because they are a better design or just structually more sound?

I would rather spend more of my money on a hull right now than anything else. I can upgrade items later after a few seasons.

Let’s get to it. What’s your budget and what do you currently have?

Budget is everything, light weight carbon isn't the best for surf.

I agree with you that budget is everything, but at the same time I don’t want to invest time and energy into something I shouldn’t have. I would rather buy a better hull now and upgrade the other components as I get better.

What motor and drivetrain do you have planned?
From what I understand, I can use a 701 and than upgrade later? I have a decent 701 that has been modified a bit. If that won't work I could upgrade. Drivetrain I have a stock SJ but can upgrade now so I can match the ski with the right pump setup. If this doesn't make sense I can sell it all and plan for something.

I am more or less trying to figure out what I need so I can save accordingly or sell what I have to.

Lol absolutely, that’s why I was thinking about starting with the hull. I figured that was the starting point.

I could be absolutely wrong but I figure buy the hull and build from there.
That is a good way to do it, you can then figure out what you like/need as you go.

Are you wanting to have the hull already turfed painted etc. Basically plug and play. Or are you wanting to get just a bare hull and build and paint yourself (option for saving money.)

Also I did parts upgrade first before my hull upgrade, I wish I didn't. Buy a badass stunt capable hull that you like and build around it. Best way to do it in my opinion.

Do you chase boats? Want to ride any sort of distance on this new hull? You are going to have to make some compromises if you want to flatwater/boat chase/surf as all 3 are different enough that there isn't really a hull that is 100% ideal for all 3 at once, other than maybe a T1. As someone else mentioned, super lightweight carbon hulls are what you want for flatwater freestyle, but not what you want for surf etc.

Superfreak Badass's and T1's seem to be the best hybrid hulls that do everything well. But with that said, i am leery of taking my Badass in the surf due to the light carbon build. But its the best boat chaser/freeride/freestyle hull I have ridden and that seems to be popular opinion. Glass -4.3 badasses are very good surf hulls but a little heavy to be a true flatwater hull.

If I was buying a dedicated flatwater hull with your budget I personally would go DVX > Phantom > Circus

If I was buying a "do it all" hybrid I would buy a superfreak (you wont find a T1 in your price range most likely, they are very rare still)

If i was buying a surf dedicated ski id prolly get a Rickter Edge or Glass Superfreak (this is just based off of reading, I have never rode surf so take this recommendation with a large dose of salt)
