How I assembled my solas pump without a press

I did this on a old kawi pump rebuild years ago. If my bearings fail again I will try this but so far so good. I only got 15 minutes on the first set but the second set probably have 15 or 20 so I'm thinking I"m okay.

G'day lads. Great right up. I've just got some OEM bearings, seals and a new shaft. I'm looking at using this process but I was just curious as to how the heat would affect the grease that I'm going to be using to pack the bearings?

I don't think the head should ruin your grease. It's not that hot, my temperature gun was set for Fahrenheit not Celsius.

I haven't heard of anyone using 80w-90, but I have heard of people using open bearings and ATF for lubricant. I was told that the ATF needs to be changed regularly, but it is supposed to offer less resistance than grease. I guess it's a trick racers used back in the day, I'm not sure if it's really worth the extra maintenance.

^^ yea it's like the banzi mod on the old 440/550s

Grease is recommended but you can get away with few different ATF weights.

Tho running the ATF you will need to change/clean fluid more often n could also shorten life if bearings.

But if your an aggressive freestyle rider then the reduced restriction might be beneficial.

I personally used marine grease. I've got about 10 hours on mine n still feels smooth

This is how I do my pumps, good write up. I was given some sort of grease from a machine shop that is meant to go on parts that use interference fit. It is meant to keep the two parts from bonding together so that future disassembly is easier. Not sure what it is called but it is white and it is a very thin paste. I heard its $$$ per quart.

Is it possible to freeze the shaft then assemble both bearings. Then put it back in the freezer and heat the the pump then slide the shaft and bearings in as 1 unit???

Which way around does this pump seal go?

This way facing out?

Or this way facing out?

When I mean facing out I mean facing towards the front of the ski once the pump is installed into the ski.

If needed I can also post something about removing the old bearings, all you need for that is a vice and a brass or dead blow hammer. (if you don't have either a regular block of wood and a hammer will work). I can write it up later, I just need to get some pictures first.
Please do! I'm killing myself trying to remove bearings out of my blaster UMI steering ( alum housing w stainless steel bearings)
