I wish hulls were like cars and were being sold at all yamaha and Kawi dealers with small ponds in the back for test rides..
Id love to buy a AM hull but its going to be a guessing game, Living in Oklahoma I don't reallly know anyone who rides.. A few people, But No one with a AM hull. If i wanted to test ride a 550 id be set.
And even if i did find someone remotely close to me with the same hull i was looking to buy i would hate to ask anyone to ride their stuff... I guess i could i go to a major freeride or World finals but even then id hate to ask anyone to ride their ski.. And id have to drop fat coin on the trip just to beg somone to ride their stuff

You won't have to beg at all! But you do have to go to a ride....and at this point ALL the rides have tons of AM hulls at them....

I say if you have the time this winter than customize your superjet tray to your liking! If you like your ski and the problems are a tray thing than it makes total sense. I would not buy a hull unless you want a different overall ride

That's what everybody says about their hull though, myself included. Almost every single person that read this thread, (other than perhaps people with purpose built hulls), has said the exact same thing about their current hull. There's no way around it, you gotta ride them for yourself and see what fits best. There's a learning curve with every hull but one will just feel like it was designed specifically for you.

And test ride more than one of every model if possible. We have 3 Matrix's in our group now and each one rides entirely different.

You make excellent points. My goal in the question was about hulls setup to be versatile. This is a freeride forum so most of what I see are freeride and flatwater skis, which most won't be good for me.

I don't need to ride a ROK-r, Dvx, bob, flatwater freak, etc, to know these skis are wrong for me.

I just don't know what skis would be right for me.

I think that for me, a lightweight glass ski based on the 08 Superjet with a interchangeable bottom deck (full sized ride plate that changes the whole hull from +2 to -6 like a select few am hulls) and a fat tray would be great for me.

I think the ROK, envy, rev, matrix, superfreak, all all good suggestions, and I will have to make an effort to try some soon.

I can barely ride a superjet, or any stockish hull ski after riding a chan for a few months now. I literally fall over like 10x before I get used to it.

If you want to progress flat water, a light short hull is the best bet. If you want to do surf, most people will say foot rocket or ricker. Or a superjet. If you want to beat your wife's sxr, get a sxr with a bigger engine because unless your heman captain endurance with the best back in the world, no am hull is going to keep up with an sxr for long. Some will say they hold their am hulls wot all day long. If this is true My response is why?

I know Oklahoma is a big state, but I I'm certain there is a guy with a nice mild Rickter with a 771 in who would let you take it for a spin. Otherwise, come to a free ride on the gulf coast with the Texas guys. There will be one in October.

You have time, why don't you think about coming to Daytona freeride. All kinds of hulls will be there. And stay with hulls that have smaller engines. That way you can feel the hull better.but for sure, catch the ride in Texas like Swap said

The small engine is key also. I purchased a php 4 mil motor halfway through the season but opted to leave my limited 701 in to learn how to ride the hull.
