Super Jet Hull shortening questions

I'm just about to start shortening my Squarenose 2.5" and had a couple questions.

Is there an advantages to doing an angle cut vs a straight cut?

Do most people cut there ride plates flush with the hull?

How many layers of glass do you put on?

I did mine straight cut seemed easier cause you can reuse the back covers and just fiberglass them in. I did 2 layers inside and about 2 on the outside. Not sure on the advantage's but my friend did angle and mine is straight we will find out when we hit the water.

Is it possible to shorten a hull with out glassing the inside? I want to shorten my hull but I have no need to refoam my ski or re turf

The angle definately looks better but I am not sure if there is any real benefit. My theory is that when the ski turns it's back with momentum, the flat backside will act as a brake where the sloped rear will act as a ramp and help lift the rear of the ski allowing it to slide out easier. The same is true in surf when a wave hits from the rear. It lifts the ski instead of pushing it. I'm sure there are times where both are advantageous as well as neither.

do you think the angle helps reduce the landing pressure on the back of the ski any? thats why i did the angle at first and now i have a big flat tray lip that i think may slap on landing and take abuse. what ever you do you will learn to ride it and you wont care if you did it one way or the other but more about the fact you did it and now know what it is all about.

yes. the green ski in my profile was done 2 years ago from the outside and has held up great. just take your time and do it right and you will have no probs.

That would depend on the landing angle, I suppose.
Angled does look better but straight makes more sense to me.

My plate is cut flush with the back of the ski. My cut was also done from the outside and was very tricky. I paid a profressional to do mine and he swore he would never do another again and I am not allowed to tell anyone who did it because he doesn't want any more people calling him to do it, lol. Too time consuming when he should have been laying up a new hull.

To do it all from the outside, build yourself a couple blanks and form fit them to the back of the ski. Run a bead of whatever you are going to use to bond the pieces together, around the inside of the hull opening about a 1/4" back. This bead will serve as a backstop for the actual bonding glue. Once the backing bead is set up, you can run another bead around the edge and push in your blank. The backer keeps the glue from pushing back and it should sqeeze out and inside forming a tight bond with no voids.

big lip to catch water on landing moving in a forward down direction but nose up. i guess it doesn't matter the lip can be a good thing i think but every landing is a bit different so yeah who cares what way, just do it angled on one side and flat on the other. haha

The glue used on mine has been tested by NASA...on the surface of Mars. :bigok:

I didn't need to refoam either...
