hx vs blaster riding style info needed.

It feels underpowered compared to a yamaha because it is in a way. It doesn't have that instant throttle response we expect from the b1 and other yamahas. It's not snappy, but its more powerful through the mid and top. It feels less powerful because it has to wind up a little. No snap. Not as exciting.

That is the nature of the rotary valve motor. Lags down low compared to a reed motor, but pulls good mid to top. Add onto that, the hx is a heavy girl with a deep V. The B1 is relatively light with a flatish bottom. For two skis that are in the same racing division, you couldn't get more different.

B2 really rips corner with good power being a 760. Also has a 155mm pump keeping you glued to the water. I wasn't really able to get it to do anything more than just go fast and turn hard though. Too heavy and big to get itself out of the water in flatwater. Even still I think it deserves a place in this conversation.

Considering it only has a 760, the B2 does have good bottom end grunt, but they are SLOW. That is an extremely wet surface hull and is darn near impossible to get over 50-52mph without some pretty major mods. Now, if you really want to have fun on a b2, they are an extremely easy triple conversion. Ive ridden a few and IMO, that is what Yamaha should have offered from the factory. Drop a GP1200 motor in one and it looks like it belongs in the hull.

I guess I'm a bit all over the place :) I've been thinking about buying something for quite a while. Riding mostly flat lakes a friend of mine told me I should get a standup.

So why not?
Sack up!
You'll flop around the first couple times you go out, but after that you'll see why he told you to get a standup. You wont even care about the HX/WB debate.

Hx does not suck. Blaster is not better.

Hx is more powerful stock, longer, faster, corners better, more comfortable seating.

B1 has more bottom end, shorter, better jumper, more trick options.

Hx is the better racer or cruiser.

B1 is better surfer, freestyle or general purpose boat.

If a hx size is acceptable, then a b2 is also a possible option. Great cruiser, good racer, the 96 comes with trim stock, a great ski. Also easier to take a lady out with you. Easier to mount than the other 2 but still fun and cheap.

This site is a of surf and freeride, and if that's your riding style, then the b1 is the best choice.
the 96 B2 did not come with the QTS Trim setup, only the 97 came with that option.

The B1 you lean into the turns, the HX, you have to stay kinda neutral into the turns.

Top speed does leave a bit to be desired. Just curious are these hull mods or driveline mods you are referring to?

If you are talking about mods while keeping it a twin cylinder motor, there are plenty - pipe, carbs, reeds, heads, porting, timing, etc. etc. As for hull mods, we tried some stuff like removing the rear stabilizers, cutting the rear corners, making out own sponsons, nothing really made too much of a change in terms of speed or handling. The B2 has a weird hull, it just does what it does. We had the normal intake grate and ride plate change, props, etc. But, like I said earlier, the most 'fun' I ever had on a B2 was when my brother dropped in a superstock gp1200 motor. That ski ran really good with speeds near 60mph and hooked up better because of the weight. For playing around and jumping wakes, it might not be the best way to go, but for running bouys and the fun of speed on that hull, it was awesome.

Hx's are money pits, blaster has a solid motor and easy to find parts for being that they are so similar to sj's, my neighbor has a hx and it never works but me I'd rather quit than sit

Thanks for the thorough reply. I agree the B2 is a weird hull. I was considering making a lightweight version...it just seems like there is so much potential there. Once the ski begins to THINK about turning it just starts to rip. I can only imagine if the design was transferred to a freestyle standup where speed is the very least of our concerns.

Back to the thread topic, I've rode a race modified blaster (don't know what class) and it was much more playful in the water. Didn't quite carve like my B2 does but felt worlds lighter...and faster obviously.

Your buddy told you to get a standup...do it. You said you are looking for fun factor; I don't think couches can compare!

Im not sure if I qualify to comment i won the over all aussie title on a 787 hx in 2008.
But i sold it not long after when I gave up racing them. I have a blaster now and this is the 2nd I have had since then.
Hx are fun and awesome on the track but not so flash for much else

The hx is a knife in the water it will go where every you aim and lean it. I used to lean on the inside rail at the back of the blasters and stop them turning in. It was great fun as soon as they tried to turn it would lift the back and they would spin out like patrol officer doing the pit manuevour

I'm curious about the 1200 b2 conversions. My wife currently has a gp1200 and I think a 1200 b2 has some appeal. B1 is also an option. She could handle anything.

The only negative to the 1200 B2 is that it can be a little of a rough ride, meaning that the hull is so flat, when you ride in chop, it is kind of jarring. Other than that, it is WAY better than the 760 version in terms of carving, speed and hook up.
