I'd still go back to whomever sold you them and raise the issue..... that looks like arse... which isn't a big deal in the long run, but at least you could get a free sheet or new sides to redo at a later time.

Thats exactly why I hated my precut kit for my sj when I decided to redo the mats. Those letters make the install a pain in the ass due to slipping out when your trying to lay it perfectly flat on the side.

Luckily I tore it off the following year, installed footholds, and put the b stock turf without the letters.

Ride it for the season, and if it bothers you that much, just redo the sides in the winter!!!!!!!.

All of us that have turfed boats around here for the past few years have found that sometimes you can get a can of glue that does not seem to work as well as others. I have tried the gel and do not like it because it takes longer to dry than the regular type. Always stir the cement first and let it dry for about 15 minutes after applying to both surfaces, not just until the liquid disappears. Usually as soon as you stick the turf to the part, it is done and cannot be moved. If it is not sticking instantly something is wrong. Do like Mike Serlin said, use a blow dryer or heat gun to make it stretch and the extreme angles stay down.

I used pre-cut and it worked great but with the pre-cut there is about two inches of turf hanging off the back. How do you do the rivets? Do you tuck the turf back under the ski and then have to put the rivets through two layers?

THanks in advance

I just ordered custom footholds from tom21 and will be doing my first turf ever in a a few weeks, and man you guys have me scared to death! I saw a post recently with the pics of dowels down, but it also looked like it had paper down at some point. Not sure I understood how you put paper down and it not stick? Do things only stick if you have the glue on both parts? If this is so can you use anything as spacers, or will dowels do fine? Another question is how to finish the top outer section of the rails. Do you glue to the edge of rail, glue past that point on the mat and stick it down then trim? I was kind of surprised not to find a detailed step by step pic by pic of the process. Does any know of one? Any help would be appreciated greatly!

You do realize that this thread is 2 years old?

Tilleyrat - do a search. There are SEVERAL recent threads on hydroturf that will be very helpful. Also check the TECH forum.

If you're having to tape things down, you didn't wait for the glue to dry.
It has to be dry before you put the turf down.

But I feel your pain. I've done both, and like cutting my own much better.

You have ate a turd and turfed? I am speechless at this point and time.

thanks moondance, that's one sweet turf job! Excellent in the foothold with no cuts. Seeing how your a professional, have you ever seen the top back corner done without cuts? Can it be done?

just start off slow. do a small spot, let it dry or use a hairdryer or heat gun to speed it up. lay it down, rubber mallet it down. repeat. as you get better you will understand how much you want to glue next. if you glue the whole bottom of the tray it will be very difficult to install without it touching and sticking somewhere it shouldn't. so just start at the front, glue about 10 inches and then install, this allows you to adjust slightly if you do make a small error, and now you can pickit up and do the next 10 inches.

really, once you start you will see how easy it is. most of the griping it due to how long it takes. I have done some that spanned 3 nights, I was just too tired and was making slower and slower progress. quit before you do something stupid, get rest and get back on it.

I have seen a lot of skis in my lifetime & I have yet to see one without seams in the corner. I'm not going to say it can't be done, but I think it would be nearly impossible to get it to lay down & form around the corner, even with heating it up.

thanks tom, the more research I do the more anxious I get! (moondance) even with the cuts (that are barely noticable) sweet job!
