I wonder if there is any possible way to get to the starter bolt and see if that thing is loose? Will any old wire work? Could I run it to something else to ground it besides the flywheel cover?

if the starter isnt jumping around, its probably not loose.

maybe a flashlight, and a dentist mirror down there?

hold the digital camera down in there with the flash, and check it out?

walmart, autozone, napa, oreilly, sells black and red cables with ends crimped on them, for a few bucks.

measure how long you need to go from battery to engine somewhere, and mount an additional black cable. that will solve that.

then on to the short, and the solenoid.

Will any wire do? I gotta some crimps and some peices I can make a wire now, and ground it to the flywheel.

the wire needs to be BIG, in case the starter ground wire is the one thats bad/dirty.

no, thats not the right wire.
You need one with at least 250 watts RMS.
