I really seem to like the Kawasaki 750 sx sxi over SJ, Advice?

5-6 years ago, I owned a nicely modded 1994 Kawasaki 750sx. I sold the ski a few years back when all of my buddies gave up on the jetski craze and all bought streetbikes. Back when I had the ski, at the time I tried out several superjets but never liked how the rode.

Now this year, I had the itch to get another standup, and just a few weeks ago I purchased a really clean 1990 superjet SN with a new 701 engine, piped, head, etc..

The boat has plenty of snap to it, but I hate how it rides. I have tried to force myself to get used to it, but I just end up frustrated.

The first thing that I don't like about it, is the factory handlepole seems to be entirely too long. Unless I ride around with my chest pressed against the handlepole, I can't seem to get the nose of the boat to ride flat. If I'm standing in a normal position, arms slightly bent, I feel like I'm standing at the very rear edge of the tray, and the boat rides in a constant nose high attitude.

Secondly, it seems so tipsy that it makes it hard to land jumps or carve turns.

Now just last week, I did ride a SXR800 and they seem to be a huge heavy boat. Perfect for cruising around, but too big for jumping. I would never want to own one. They seem like a couch with a handlepole. Just not my thing.

Yesterday, I contacted a guy locally who was selling a 750 sx and I took it out on the water for a test ride. Immediately, I felt at home on it. It just seemed to fit with my riding style.

The 750 sx sxi seems to be a perfect mix of the agility of the superjet and the stablity of the SXR.

So why do so many people seem to rip on the 750 sx sxi. The only jetski that I haven't test rode is a roundnose superjet but from what I have read on here, the SN and RN both ride essentially the same.

If this is true, I'm really considering buying another 750 sx sxi. I understand that most people will say, "who cares what other people think, buy / ride what you are comfortable with" but on the same hand, I feel as if there is a crowd of 10,000 people all walking one direction and I'm the one alone person walking in the opposite direction, something just wouldn't seem right.

Should I hold off on buying another 750 sx until I first test ride a Round Nose superjet. Most people say the RN's are the ones to buy. Will it have more stablity than the SN that I currently own?

Any comments, critism, or advice is greatly appreciated.

There is a transition period of getting used to a SJ's handling, it does take time, but in the end it's more stable and handles better.

SJ's like a lot of steering input from the handlebars where Kawi's like a lot of body position input.

SJ's are also quite a bit lighter and not 100% made of SMC, so easier to work on IMO.

Don't let them gas you... or else you might wake up with a different "dentist's utensil" in your mouth than you were expecting....

you forget to mention what type of riding you want to do. for bouys I like the sxr, but I am slowly modding it for surf.

for surf, the sj, acually for anything I like my rn. to me the 750 is the same as the sxr just less motor.

maybe try to ride some others skis and see what you like before you buy.

How much time have you spent trying to get used to the SN? Just curious...

I own both a SN and a RN, and I can say that the RN does feel much more stable to me and handles very differently. For me, the SN wants to turn very flat but I can carve the RN like nobody's business...which is weird, since I think the bottom hull is the same. Also, the SN handlepole (aka "the shovel") is not my favorite. All of my friends ride Kawi's (a 750 and 2 800's) and they used to bust on me for being the only Yamaha guy. However, after just recently getting the RN, and all of us getting used to it at the same time, I don't get busted on any more. :)

Both the SN and RN will feel tipsy at first if you haven't ridden in a while, especially compared to the 800SXR. However, after 5 hours or so of riding you'll be very glad you got the RN and not the 750 in my opinion. Also, tons more cool stuff available for the RN too...

come on man, if you dont know..then dont give advice!

yes, the square and round DO have the same bottom...

however, the square has a lowered pole bracket from the factory....a stock square vs. a stock round handle NOTHING alike. NOTHING.

if you want to race, go kawi...

if you want to freestyle/freeride....go SJ

there are exceptions to both of these rules, but unless you have more money than time or like doing things the hard way...then go in the route I just posted

I had a SN, and now have a RN with tubbie II's. They ride a little different, but it only took a couple rides to get used to. I know the tubbies make some of the difference. I moved the same motor, pump, rideplate to my RN. I put a shorter RN pole on my square, and it made a huge difference.

My friend has a 750sx, and we'll switch every once in awhile. I can't ride the Kawi as good since it's so different. He can't ride the SJ. The Kawi handles a little better at high speeds. The front end of my SJ seems to walk a little when you go fast. The SN and RN both do this, but I was able to get used to it. You have to lean the Kawi more to get it to turn. The SJ's turn a little more flat. Just turn the bars and lean your body, not the boat. I'm sure I could get used to the Kawi after a couple days, and have just as much fun.

We've never weighed them, but the Kawi feels a little heavier when we slide them on the trailer.

When you decide you want to put footholds in the Kawi is a pain to do. There's more aftermarket parts out there for the SJ too.

edit : He put a shorter RN pole on his 750sx, and really liked the change.

Put some work into a SXR and you'll have a great all-round boat, surf, flat water, buoys....you not going flat water flip it but imo best all round.

Now we wait for the SJ bleating :)

Well, I really don't want to sink more money into this SN with buying a shortened handlepole. I know that I do not want an SXR, they just seem too big.

I'm guess that my only options are to test ride a Round Nose. If I still don't like how the round nose rides, then I'm going to build up a 750sx like my old one.

Anyone in the northern Pittsburgh area that has a RN that they would let me test ride? I'm in Kittanning, PA. about 45-60 minutes north of Pittsburgh.

took me a few rides to get used to my SN SJ. I was regretting selling my 550 for a while. I felt so much more comfortable on the kawi. Now, I could never go back... love my superjet. (when it runs)

I went from a mod'd Kawi 650sx to an 07 SJ - why - hmm I wanted something new and I didn't like the 800SX and because everyone said to.

Can I ride my SJ? After only about 4-5 hrs on it, still no. Its like I'm starting over again. I'm getting ready to cut the pole and put some Rev footholds in it - hopefully time and these mod's will help.

Would I do again - yes.....I think so.

I just scheduled my appointment. Actually it was for the dentist. LOL Any other advice on the above?

just kidding- I rode my 750sx the other day and had a blast.
It is a fun rec ski, no plans to sell it
But, I ride the SN
my 13 year old son rides the 750 most of the time

I used to ride Kawi's for quite a few years. (actually learned how to ride on a 750 sxi) I loved those skis. But now that i ride in the surf, SJ's are the way to go. Like others have said, there are so many aftermarket parts for the SJ's.

If you can, really take a look at the inside of the two skis. After working at a shop and working on the 2 different skis, i came to really like the set up of the SJ. The placement of the waterbox, gas tank, the configuration of the elec. box, the battery is easier to get out, etc. The motor was easier to remove also. I found that it was just a better design when it came to working on the ski. If you plan on modding the ski at all, i think you'll be happier with the RN SJ in the end. (the Kawi's have those stupid tubes in the side of the tray which makes installing foot holds a real pain in the ars) I'm not rippin on the Kawi, i just have come to prefer the SJ. I still plan on building another 550 to play on, and i'd have another 750 as a back up ski to take a friend riding.

The 750's are a dime a dozen, but the SJ's are hard to find cuz those that have em, don't want to get rid of them.

Read all that pros and cons that everyone posts. When it's all said and done, it's YOUR ski so go with the one that you like the best. What ever you decide to go with, ride the heck out of it and have FUN!!
