If you had a $8,000 budget what would you buy......

Buy a nice limited mod RN and use the rest for riding expenses.

A/M hull is a good idea but would be kinda hard to build with a $8k budget, unless you find a older SJ and a older a/m hull, but you will still prolly have over $8K total into it after its all said and done. I built a Rickter last winter with a donor ski and it turned into a $20k+ ski pretty fast.

I bought a used superfreak with Xmetal pole, chinpad ride plate and intake grate, for 6600. Switched over everything from my SN superjet, that already had most of what you'd want. The SN in my old build thread, I paid 100 for a hull and hood, about 500 or more in materials, and a 701 vxr that ran for 200, the rest of the parts were bout here or from buddy's. I used the crank and cyl. And switch to 62t cases. I figure I had less than 10k in my freak with the 701 in it, so if you buy used you can save a ton.

I also have a carbon freak that I got a deal on bc it is prebadazz but still has all the features I want. Parted out my rn701 to go in there. Even if I included all the gas it cost me to go Michigan-Florida-Michigan in 48 hrs and the rn parts. It was less than 8k$. I love how huge it launches off boat wakes and it is amazing in surf.

Why are you guys suggesting a square nose, this is the worst advice there is. A round nose hull is already pretty outdated as well... Get a used a/m hull and a properly built big bore engine. If you ride surf, round nose with ported 701 will be plenty of fun.

I give that advice because if I could start over again I would gladly take a 701 sn with a pipe and a mag pump. Have a max of $2500/$4000 invested and keep the $17500/$16000 for other toys. I wish I could have it all back and start over.

Im sorry, I would disagree with you 100%. A properly built am hull with all the proper parts is like a sore dick, you cant beat it. Its only money, you cant take it with you :)

Word up. I'm doing that exact thing now. Mag pump, 771 and fixed steer hood on a $100 square hull with a bunch of reinforcement. Loads of fun for small money.

Find friends thAt are t freeloaders. Free ride is a sport, not when a "friend" takes advantage of you.

So true. With thatbeing said, I keep a loaner boat. I have loaned it out quite a bit, and it gets a decent amount of use. It will still get loaned out, but a friend that rides it more than 3-4 times needs to be looking for their own ski.

Agreed. i have one friend that thinks that since I have an extra ski, he doesnt need to go out and buy his own. He loves the sport though and tags along with us every time we go to the lake. He has about 6 days of riding on my ski. I think thats enough. I suggested he buy his own and he says "its never going to happen". His excuse? He doesnt have a truck to pull one. Ive seen plenty of these pulled by civics. Hell, I bet with a creative setup, one could be towed with a damn motorcycle. He wants to join us on our weeklong trip to flaming gorge. He's going to be bummed out when my extra ski is conveniently in use by someone else the whole trip.

I loan out the wife's ski all the time. I don't mind since all my friends give me gas money without question and normally more then they use.

unless you have friends that ride skis, i wouldnt even buy one. i wouldnt buy one for myself, or two for another friend to ride. they won't keep it up nor pay for gas. upkeep on a ski sucks, upkeep on a surf ski really sucks. Upkeep on 2 surf skis... well, F that. i built my first ski about 5-6 years ago, rode by myself a few times then parked it until i met the crew i ride with now. which was about 3-4 years later.

I think that's bad advice.

I only have friends who ride skis because I bought a ski. I didn't know anything about the sport. My dad bought me a WR3 when I was 18. I rode with a few friends that had couches and that was it. Once I bought a 650sx I found on craigslist, someone from the lake sent me to this site, which is where I met Tom21, which is how I met the other Gulf riders. I met Pete on this site but only because I was buying used parts for my superjet. He lived 3 blocks from my best friend and in 10 years at the lake and 4 with a ski I had only seen him once and never met him. Now I ride with him weekly. I have a few friends who I was able to talk into getting skis because I have mine.

Having a ski helps you meet people with skis. Having a ski helps convince others to get skis.
