I all but completely eliminated social media (Facebook) a few years ago. I purged about 300 friends indiscriminately Two things happened to cause this occurrence.
First I recognized the toxicity of the AI algorithms. I was reading a bunch of political news. I recognized that my feed (not my shares but the articles Facebook feeds you) became almost entirely political.
Social media is bad enough by itself. The analogy I use is that you go to the mall and stand on a soap box and start rambling about whatever bullpoop you have on your mind. Thousands of people stroll by thinking you are a complete moron, but a few dozen stop, listen and chant. This gives a positive feedback loop that your bullpoop matters, when really, no.
But the AI makes it so much worse. The AI guides slowly shuffles your soap box over to other like minded soap boxes. Then comes the group think. Now not only do you think people care about your bullpoop, you think Everyone agrees with you. Now a small sample sized has changed a narrow minded view to a collaborative world view.
Secondly, privacy. A study showed that a majority of people utilize social media to spy or gossip on other people rather than as a relationship building / KIT tool. I had people from high school on my friends list and I wasn’t even friends with them. I decided to purge my friends list when my wife got a new car, I went to work and said something and the response I got was, yeah, I saw that.
And there’s one more thing that is important. The psychology of addiction. Social media uses the same tactics as casino slot machines with notifications. Studies have shown that the receiving notifications releases dopamine, the reward hormone. This means that notifications for replies and likes cause people joy, and they seek that joy. That in itself is not so bad, but the push notifications. I have been absolutely shocked at how fast people will like a comment I leave on favebook. Either they never put their phones down or they pick them up the moment they ding. This all contributes to an instant gratification culture.
So no, it’s not just you. Social media and discussion forums are great for connecting people like us, niche groups short of local relationships. However, social media is a substitute for local relationships for most people, and a substitute for critical thinking for many others.
