Very good news. As with any closed head injury, any kind of positive response that shows the person is responding to outside stimuli is very positive. Best wishes to Joe and his family.

Got an awesome not from Joe's brother Shawn today - thought I'd share - keep the faith gang!

Good News!!!

Joe is responding to me when I speak, by moving his eye lids, head, toes or squeezing hands when asked to do so. He is still there and comprehending. His hands are restrained to protect him from pulling his breathing/feeding tubes, bandages, I.V. etc. . His surgeon was impressed and said "He is going to get better". We will be doing music therapy daily and reading to him. Still on morphine and atavan so he will be "in and out". I think he likes hearing about all of you as he seems to try and smile. He is still comatose and it may take weeks for him to awaken so be patient. I hope to be able to have visitors see him in the near future.

Thanks
Shawn

technically Joe would not be in a coma if he is responding to external stimuli...

coma - state of prolonged unconsciousness, usually the result of injury, disease, or poison, in which an individual is incapable of sensing or responding to external stimuli and internal needs.

I would say that he is well on the road to recovery if he is showing signs of improvement this early, his comatose charactaristics are possibly largly im part due to the drugs...

DISCLAIMER: this is purley speculation, I have no idea whats going on with Joes condition. I am only sharing some amature medical insight so people can be more informed on the subject.

technically Joe would not be in a coma if he is responding to external stimuli...

Not necessarily true. There are different levels of coma, which relate to various stages of altered consciousness. People in comas can sometimes walk and talk, but are not on the same level of consciousness as you or I, who interact logically (sometimes) with other people. The Glasgow Coma scale is one of the points of reference to help determine this. So, technically speaking, Joe can respond to certain stimuli, but he is not 100% conscious and aware per the GCS. Thus, medically speaking, he is comatose.
The improvement in his ability to respond is good news, since it shows swelling and other injury to the brain are healing.
